Found a few on the web, but I'm mainly inquiring about how it manages memory...I used to double the MIN/MAX in Win98 to whatever the memory installed..is there such a thing in XP Pro to enhance performance?

The best way to enhance your gaming performance in WinXP is format C: and reinstall Win98. This has been proven in numerous tests..

If you desire to keep XP however (despite it's butt-ugly UI and other quirks) you can find some tweaks from http://www.tweak3d.net http://www.tweakxp.com for example. A good all-round utility to tweak stuff is x-setup which you can download from http://www.tucows.com

LOL on the format, I actually love XP, and its run every game I've loaded on it flawlessly, and the X45 will not run on my 98 system, but works great on XP

Isn't the new Service Pack due out today? Be careful tweaking... the effects of some previously posted tweaks might have different effects after applying the new Service Pack... just a thought.

BTW - I love XP so far. I've had for one week. Setting up the Internet connection sharing network with our other computer was a breeze. The built in features are wonderful. Everything is working great and it seems very stable. I might have lost some FPS in AH compared to 98SE, but if that is the tradeoff, its well worth the benifits of XP.

As far as FPS goes, I was running AH in 1024 res on Win98 on a PIII-800EB, so I can't really compare.

Doing the AH benchmark (Spawn hangar field 1, pizza map, B17 12X500lbs, 50% fuel, clipboard map up) I was getting about 26 FPS with the aforementioned system, now I get 85 FPS using 1280 res with the new box(see signature below)...SWEEEEEET!

I did have some problems getting XP to update any drivers for the Saitek X45, but after some critical updates for XP, everything is working great.

I use the Tradional windows lay-out, nice little option XP gives you if your not comfortable with the desk top look.

I find windows XP confusing. I am a Systems professional but I am using it at home..which version do I buy? Can it tell if I am at home or not a professional?

Make a big swap file and put it in a different partition or drive, that helps.

Oh and with WinXP the more RAM the better. 512mb minimum.

Pongo, be careful with SP1.

Windows XP can now tell right away after you load SP1. If you are a Professional at Home and you try this, you got some 'splaining to do.

512 ram here. considering going to 1024...worth it? Can XP utilize that extra ram or am I just wasting $$?

It seems that MS is tweaking XP to the direction where it starts to limit your constitutional rights (such as downloading warez, divx and mp3's, basically freedom of choice, speech and privacy of your home.) so I'll stay away from it.

It's the first OS which acts aggressively on end-users whether problems are their own fault or not. I'm currently studying Lindows..

LOL Rip, that system isn't fast enough for you? Going to 1 Gig of ram won't do anything significant other than deplete your wallet by about $90.

http://www.annoyances.org is pretty useful for eliminating a bunch of rubbish that you don't need. The forums are OK but I think the XP one is predominantly people asking how to avoid the registration purpose.

The big performance increase is from disabling services you don't need. I don't disable all the stuff this guy does, but I disable a lot of them. The above guid references this page for services information:

Ah well, his services information is reasonably sound. Better than most out there certainly.

Also, so far I've put SP1 for XP on a few machines, and I've had no problems at all.

I've been busy at work, plus it's summer, plus I'm biking a LOT.

Basically, I've been on Weight Watchers since March, and I've lost 60 lbs. I was 250lbs, and I'm passing 190 on my way to 180 or so. A big part of that has been that I've gotten REALLY into mountain biking. I bike to work almost every day (about 10k each way) and I go hardcore off-roading 2 or 3 times a week. I love it, but it's also taken me outside alot more than normal.

Plus, I've been working on some certifications. I need to update my MCSE, since my old one expired. Bleh.

And I'm moving from Halifax to Ottawa on Sept. 30th.

And I sold my old Athlon 700 2 weeks before I had time to finish building my new machine. (Story in this forum.)

And I was feeling kinda burned out, and needed a bit of a break. I'm back now though.

That cover it?

What's been going on with you Skuzzy? I missed all the news... you sold Applink? Watcha up to now?
