Gliders Meet The Queen!
« on: September 09, 2002, 08:24:59 AM »
From my weekly AvWeb email news briefs comes this gem of a tale. Reminds me of the time I was able to glide a dead-engine 109G2 all the way across two sectors....

DROPPING IN ON THE QUEEN: Queen Elizabeth might have been amused, but her staff was in bit of a lather after some unexpected visitors dropped in on her Scottish castle last week.  Two gliders made forced landings at Balmoral Castle, the Queen's favorite summer retreat, while taking part in a local competition, a royal spokeswoman said.  "They landed in the grounds of the estate after running out of air to fly in," she told Reuters, raising the question of what the Queen breathes while at Balmoral.  The unnamed spokeswoman said the Queen watched the gliders land and was relieved that both pilots, a man and a woman, were  safe. Police questioned the two and released them and though they may not have won a prize, the story should be worth a few pints at the local pub.
