Perk the Ostwind. Well, Somebody Had to Say It (Again).
« on: September 10, 2002, 04:58:20 PM »
In another post in Gameplay/Feeback Issues I suggested that GV icons seen from planes should be reduced from d1.5 to perhaps 500 yds.  Innominate quickly pointed out that this would make Ostwinds more deadly than they already are, which is a good point.

******
The Ostwind should be perked.  That would reduce the number of them about, eventually.  Many people have collected quite a few perks, though.  I have about 1,300.

******

I believe the main criterion for being perked is rarity in WW2, coupled with superior performance, I suppose.  (I mean, only 527 Gloster Gladiators were produced, but only a few people in AH would seriously suggest perking it.  Only a few.)

I'm quite sure that fewer than 400 Ostwinds were produced in WW2, and given how deadly it is, 5 or 10 perks isn't unreasonable.

HTC has talked about introducing the Sherman tank and perking the Panzer IV.  That would be fine.  Five perks for a Pz. IV & 10 for an Ostwind?  Or even 2 for a Pz. IV and 5 for an Ostwind.  We gotta have something to spend our GV perks on.

************

By the way, should the Yak-9U be perked?  Believe it or not, it never served in WW2.

"The last model to be developed during the war was the Yak-9U, although it was not in time to see action.  It was a completely new aircraft opening the way for production of the final postwar model, the Yak-9P, which saw action in Korea."

Only 44 Ostwinds were made. Certainly worthy of a small perk cost.

Yes, I think the Ostwind should be perked.  Yes, I think people are probably sick of hearing me whine about it.

Incidentally, there were more than a few versions of the Yak-9U.  At least some of those saw action in WW2, starting in 1944 I believe.  Ask Vermillion, he is a Yak expert, knows all about that plane.

Agreed on the perking of the Ostwind. It seems impossible to kill them, I have been playing for 2 years now and I never kill them, probably once a tour or so. Most of the time I stay away since they are my death knell. Fast rate of fire, 1000 rounds of ammo, and they don't die when you whack them with pnzr rounds. Seems perks are needed to keep them from dominating like they are...

Perking the Ostwind without fixing the over-vulnerability of GVs to aircraft guns would render vehicles nearly useless.

My info says the Yak-9U entered service in the second half of 1944.

You can't hit the broadside of a barn with one of those things.
I ignore them, unless you attack one at an angle if less than 60 or 70 degrees. The 5in. is the critter you should worry about. Iv'e popped em from beyond 5k with one of those. Totally unrealistic. The 5in. mount of WWII required 9 men. The pointer, trainer, 2 projectilemen, 2 powdermen  2 caseing catchers and the gun captain. Projectiles came up a hoist from a circular area below called the merry-go-round. the powder caseings came up thru the deck of the gun mount. The caseings were lifted by means of a halyard attached to a protective covering called a butterfly and put in the breach of the gun. the projectile was then lifted in from the hoist and both powder caseing and projectile was rammed into the barrel. Now the pointer and trainer are given instructions either by the gun captain or CIC ( combat information center). Then the order is given to fire.  Now do that in the 1 second a round rate of fire you have in the game.

yak-9ut, but we need earlier VVS planes.

Only time an ostie bothers me is when I am close to umm. It aint like they are running me down at 6k.

Heres a tip for the base rapers, Kill the vh and ack before you vulch. And if you have bombs use them on the gvs.

Dont tell me "we do, the osties just roll to fast". I have seen it plenty, folks running through ack to chase a guy spawning. If they would  just strafe the ack he could vulch longer and get more kills. I also see the vh up or gvs out and some guy dropping bombs on the fh or fuel tanks.

No gv can touch ya unless you let umm. You just gotta be 2 % smarter then it.

I suggest perking the ostwind to 10 perks, the panzer 5, fixing gv spawns, fix HE damage to objects, and add the agreed apon new gvs (I think it was tiger they said they were adding)

I would trade a way to aim rockets on pt boats for perks too.

Didn't HT say he was thinking about perking the Osti in his interview with Saber?

I have better luck knocking down planes in the M-16, it seems.  I can't aim the Ostwind worth a hoot.  But hey, we need a gv to be perked just so I can burn those perk points, so it might as well be the Ostwind.

Yep.  Panzer and Ostie will be perked when the American Sherman tank is released.

Actual text of the interview...
Quote
HITECH: And on the perk side…you asked me about perked vehicles.  It’ll either go one of several ways, and I haven’t talked to Doug to find out which one he’s going to go do.  We’ll probably be bringing out either the Tiger** [tank], the T-34, or the Sherman.  If we bring the Sherman out, the odds are we’ll perk the [Ostwind mobile anti-aircraft tank, already modeled in the game] and the [Panzer IV H].

**Subsequent to this interview, Art Director, Nathan "Natedog" Mathieu, confirmed that the new armored vehicle in development was in fact the German Tiger tank.  “My, Grandmother…what a big cannon you’ve got!”

Straffo,

I'm sure you hold your own opinion in high regard, but, believe it or not, simply saying "wrong" won't convince too many people.  Could you cite something to support your claim?  I'd like to know what the facts are.

Karnak said his info has the Yak-9U in service in late 1944.  Give us details, please!
