ATI 9700 what is the word?
« on: September 12, 2002, 12:19:38 PM »
Hi all,

I have a system with a VooDoo 5500 at the moment and another game I play will shortly be dropping support for it :(

So I am looking for a good replacment, and having read several reviews on the ATI 9700 I was wondering does anyone here have first hand experiance with this card?

Any info appreciated :)

Gray, I just went from a V5 5500 to GF4 Ti4200 (o/cled the toejame out of it too)..

On a 1Ghz system, my FPS doubled in most games using the same graphics settings. Increasing particular games to even pertier graphics settings didn't seem to hurt the fps very much. So now games look much nicer, and still faster than on the V5...

As for the Radeon 9700, for $400... this thread (particularly the posts by Mark_H) should be of concern to you.

I was going to buy one, wasn't on the shelf yet, so that's why I went with the GF4... from that thread, I'm glad I did.

Wulf, that really is not a fair statement to make, based on a hand ful of people who are having problems.  The one you pointed out was someone who was/is complaining that the card cannot be overclocked without having artifacts.  I have to laugh a bit at that.

I have not had any issues with mine.  I got my $335.00 worth.

Apparently not Pongo, kind of hard to read posts that don't exist.

Skuzzy, I'm glad I didn't buy it.. I overclock by nature, first thing I would of done... burnt the toejam outta that card and chances are I wouldn't of been able to get another one.

I didn't say don't get one, but that thread would definitely interest me if I were going to buy one.

Even though I was pissed off before I'm missing that card already.....
Its there wulfie.

I don't know that this is the guy you want to base your evaluation of the card on.

And Skuzzy... did you go from a 4600 to the 9700?  What were the differences in image quality?

Went from an 8500 to the 9700.  The image quality is remarkable.  ATI stuffed better DAC's into the 9700 versus the 8500 (which were not bad at all).
The posts I have read of 4200/4600 users who went with the 9700 pretty much concur the image quality is better than the 4200/4600 cards.  Take that for what it's worth.  I have no first hand knowledge of this.

Hard to make a side-by-side comparison as the first thing you want to do is to crank up the FSAA and ansio and play.  Once you do that it is hard to go back.

Oh Wulfe, there are people who have successfully overclocked the core to 400Mhz.  I wouldn't do it.  Heck at it's stock speed a 2.5Ghz P4 has a tough time keeping up with the card.

The card is in my home system.  I will try to get some screenies between the 8500 and 9700 in the next few days.

Check the time of my posting here. Check the time of him posting his "I miss it now.." posting over there.

It wasn't there, so couldn't of read "the entire thread" as it was "entirely" there when I posted the link here.

It's something to keep in mind for anyone picking up a 9700 or who has one.

My mind was already made up when I picked the GF4 off the shelf... before I read this "review".

the more telling date time stamp is when I posted and when you flamed me...
if you had read it when I posted instead of flaming you might have saved yourself looking silly.

I don't see how I look silly.

You asked me if I read the whole thread in reply to a post I made here. The  post by me here was made before the part you are referring to... yet you ask me if I read the whole thread? Yes I did. I read it in it's entirety. There was no mention of missing anything when I posted here, and thusly did not exist.

I look silly, how?
