P2p
« on: September 16, 2002, 04:41:10 PM »
I have never done any file sharing.  I am not a big music fan.  But I am curious abot this area of computers.  My wife bought a CD burner a few months ago,  its been collecting dust ever since.

What do you guys think of P2P?  What  is the best (kazaa, grokster, etc. )  What about the ethics of useing it? I have read also, that spy ware, and virus's can be a problem.

file sharing programs are very powerful...
this should be enough to scare you though.

The city of Aspen found out last week just how powerful.
They have hardware and software firewalls, etc but one of the commisioners (some public office) loaded it on her machine.
Luckily the person that discovered that her (and her entire network) files were displayed to all who looked... not just music files.. but everything!

If you use a good firewall and configure it correctly this shouldn't be a problem in most cases.  Still, the point is that you should be very careful and make sure you know what you're making available before you go hog-wild with it.

ethically speaking, I'm not sure. I tend to DL old songs so I justify it that way. The artists seem to be eating well though.

I've used Bearshare (can choose not to install spyware) and Kazaa. Both work fine.

Try Kazaa Lite... it's the same as Kazaa but without all the nasty spy ware.

I'm using morpheus.  I like it ok.  it sets up a folder for files you want to share, instead of letting it scan your computer for certain types.

WinMX is nice, but its so busy!  Many times I'll search for a song and find the file holder has a 30-40+ line waiting for their connection.

I don't like Morpheus or Kazaa because of that spyware crap and I don't think I'll go back to them even if it is "lite."

This is what the internet is for, sending information to one another.. for free.

They're more than music.
There are movies, software, etc.

Be carefull what you share.

Here's how I look at piracy:

A week before FoTR(The first lord of the rings movies) was in theaters, I downloaded a DVD quality copy of it.  I didn't watch it, untill after I saw the movie in theaters.  The only reason I don't already own a copy of the DVD is that I'm waiting for the uncut version(due in november??).

For the most part, piracy gets people listening to things they wouldn't otherwise hear.  Most pirated music and software is stuff that the person would never buy or use otherwise.  It gets the software out there though.  With the vast amount of crap produced by the recording industry, this kind of sampling is a big help.

The truely despicable piracy though is amazinhunks who burn it and turn around and sell it.  Just as bad are the people who buy it.  Same goes for commercial users who are making money off of using it.

Hehe, I won't get into it.  I do what I do and I get what I get.  I'm happy with what I can get a hold of.  Not all P2P file transfers are illegal.  Yes, I've downloaded songs ranging from Metallica to CCR to the Eagles to Filter.  Whoopie-dink.

However, many relatively unknown artists get their work around via P2P programs.  New artists are discovered and listened to every day this way.

As for the piracy of software, I wouldn't know, I don't go that route.

download kazaa lite it is a stripped down version which has virtually no pop ups and no spyware.  WIN MX blows, Morpheus blows, Audiogalaxy blows even more, I've tried em all and kazaa lite is by far the best. I  have over 3000 mps much of which came from kazaa, as well as just about any software title you are looking for.

This is thanks to the amazinhunks that comprise the band, Metallica.  No wonder the amazinhunks wanted these shut down, James needs drug money every week.

THIEVERY is selling a CD for $16.99 that costs .50 cents to make and package.

omg lol

A decent way to scan for media files WITHOUT p2p software:

Fire up your favourite search engine, and search for the phrases "Index of" AND "Parent directory", AND desired media format (".mp3" , ".avi") plus some sort of qualifier (say, "napalm" in my case).

It finds loads of Apache-generated directory listings to feast on ;) a little script is advised to sort the results...
