While this may not be the designated forum for this kind of issue, I'm so impressed with the collective knowlege of you who regularly contribute to the discussion here that I thought I'd run my problem by y'all (that's "you all" for those of you in Yankee Land) and see if you can at least give me some insight to the nature of my connection difficulties. Here goes:

Every stinkin time I log onto AH the same thing happens, in the following order: 1) I get into the game; 2) Fly for 4 - 10 minutes; 3) Lose UDP, switch to TCP, then disco a minute later; 4) I then must exit the game and completely reboot. Takes about 3 minutes to get back into the game from this point. Now here's the wierd part, this happens about 3 - 4 times the first 30 -45 minutes, then after that I can play for hours uninterrupted!

I've checked th ol' Ping Plotter, nothing suspicious there. I have a 56K, dial-up connection - could that be th problem? I dunno. Just cornfused and frutrated here. I've tried talking to HT techs about it, but they didn't get back to me.

Any ideas you fellas may have I'd sure appreciate your input. Heck I might be a pretty good shooter, but it's hard to tell, cuz about teh time I'm fizxin' to lower the hammer on a scuzzy Nit or Bish (j/k) I get the ol "Lost UDP..." msg.:(

Although I can't help you, I hope you get an answer. Same stinkin' thing happens to me except my time frames are a little different than yours and it doesn't happen everytime I log in.

I do, however, have to reboot as you do because I'm completely locked up with the last line in the text buffer "Lost UDP session, switching to TCP". In addition, I get a horrendous feedback in my headset and I get 2 MS Gamepads, which I don't have, added to my game controllers. Needless to say, if I don't delete them before I come back in, my JS doesn't work until I do.

I'm on cable with an average 50 ms ping time and no packet loss.

Are you running any firewall software Slimm?
Here we put salt on Margaritas, not sidewalks.

Nope, no firewall. Just a plain dial up conn., with a 56K modem.

Thats (not) funny as pretty much the same thing happens to me. I usually connect up the first time for 30 secs to a couple minutes, the next is a bit longer, and by the third or fourth time I'm ok. I don't seem to switch between tcp/udp, it just locks me up. No desktop, lock up. One time it actually shut my computer power off. I had zonealarm installed for a while and that helped. Of course when I loaded the last update it freaked. I couldn't get it to re-accept AH, so I re-installed it. No luck there so I just turn it off before going to AH. Frustrating to say the least.

So, Lizard3, I see as your location you've listed "Heart of Dixie". You wouldn't happen to be in Alabama, would you? I'm originally from Birmingham, myself.

Oh, and thanks for your input.

Slimm: Have you tried tweaking your connection? If not your packet size by default is set to 1500 (should be 576) which is to big for dial up and AH which also uses large packets (this may be part of the issues with AH losing UDP frequently).  If you want to go to http://www.speedguide.net on the main page at the top you will see TCP/IP Optimizer/Analyzer use the analyzer first to check your connection then download the optimizer select optium settings and reboot.

Another site for tweaks/inforamtion/knowledge is http://www.dslreports.com  By the way these are good sites to visit even if you have high speed the tweaks will help with your connection.

Several other things you may want to have checked is your phone line for noise and the wiring. (if  the wiring is older have the phone company or its easy to do run new wiring from the box to your home, then from the box at your house to where you connect, replace the wall jack if its older or you see rust-rain/snow will cause this).

You may also want to invest $25 to $60 for a new V.92 hardware dial up modem which will give you faster connection {think the connection is 73 kbps} (ask your isp which call in number supports V.92).

Hope this helps,

Wow, Catch. You've certainly given me something to  think about. I've never tweaked my connection, but maybe the sites you've refered me to will help educate me.

Thanks, much.:D

Yup, near abouts. Not originally, an Alaskan transplant. Did junior and high school here. Left for 10 years, back for almost as long. I lived in Forestdale back then. You?

As to wiring, mines new. I get a great connect speed even with dial up.

I think it may have something to do with my motherboard, MSI Kt333 Ultra. Been hearing weird things about it. Moose and I both had the same chipset and shared some weird artifact/spike looking things on our screens at the con. We both ran invidia cards, he a Gforce4, mine a Gforce3. He changed motherboards and fixed his. I haven't...yet.

That chipset definitely is weird though I dont know how much it would affect a modem (anything is possible)

that particular problem I had at the con I was able to replicate with a different motherboard of the same model and another ti4600 that a friend of mine owns. needless to say i think that it wasn't ready for prime time
