I modify my images in Adobe Illustrator (And Sometimes Photoshop). What I do is this:
1) Open the image in AI.
2) Convert the color to grayscale.
3) Convert the color to RGB.
4) Adjust the color (Using Preview and the sliders to get the 'tint' I want..sort of sepia's it)
5) Select: Filter, Texture, Grain, Graintype:Speckle
6) Adjust the Intensity to the low end (Between 1 and 20) and the Contrast in the midrange (35 to 65). Basically this will depend on the image. Just adjust it until you think it 'looks' good.
This is also the technique I used for the Zero pic, however, I didn't adjust the original colors. The Zero is an example of how I will adjust the AH pics for my website.

I do post production (Such as trimming the image) In photoshop. Here is an example I made today using these techniques:
