New Formula 1 Sims - what's the best?

For advice it's a lot like AH flying competition:
Concentrate, stay clear to have good reflexes, learn the corners, learn the car, learn the opponents (if time trial, you are it), go as fast as possible (this means don't spin, don't scrub E needlessly, don't use bogus lines), be a cheating bastard :)

Maybe the only constant I see: the guy who wants it most is already ahead of everyone.

Yeah, you just summed up all the stuff I could figure out myself. :p

What about actual cornering techniques?

I'm used to Rally games where you throw the bastard into the corner sideways... somehow I don't think that'll work here. :)

Spa Franchorchamps (spelling) is the best track. Thats my favorite besides Monaco then SilverStone then Monza. As far as driving in simulation, Spa is/was my favorite.

Yo norcal racers, you guys know there is a SportsCar race this weekend at Laguna Seca? They also have 250cc Rotax Euro international FIA karts. Thats what my buddy told me. I've never seen those go before.

I don't know what to tell you, just drive it like you would in reality, it's a simulation, so there aren't any tricks to learn.
Stay smooth, throttle steer and click the apexes. Keep trying to go faster consistently.
The netherlands is a good track for medium speed drifting practice.
A clutch+accelerator+brake setup on independent axii is much worth it.
There are a bunch of addon tracks, really too many to begin listing.

Well for learning and practice I also think Monza and France are good learning tracks. My 02 cents.

Yes, Monza is good for basic turn approaches. The last turn (parabolica?) is good practice for both high speed braking and throttle steering timing.
Rouen is pretty slippery at almost all turns for hotlapping, is not as quick to get back on the road as the Netherlands track, the netherland's line is slower most of the time.
Nurburgring is a must if you have the patience, and Monaco is good for low speed traction limit practice.
Canada is also pretty slippery, and Mexico is a bit like Monza, simple turns, but faster, longer and tighter, so the drifting into and out of the apex is less forgiving. The tires (edit:tire guards sticking out of ground) are a pain.
Kyalami is also a slippery track, until you memorize the topology. A simple track but most of the players I know agree it's a weird track.
There's few tracks alike.

I still keep GPL around for the 'Ring.  It's worth the cost of the game just to get that track.  :)
It's a pretty good game for 1998 but it shows its age now.

Kratzer I advise you start out in the F2 cars to get to know the tracks.  Then once you are confident in the F2 you can spend time in the F1 cars.

The main thing to keep in mind is that these cars are seriously overpowered and have very greasy tires.  So you have to be very gentle with the right foot, and you have to learn to drive with much higher slip angles than are possible in formula racing today.

Played the F1 2002 demo a bunch last night, and finally got it figured out more or less I think.  Rally stuff makes me think I need to accellerate through the corners, and set up the car before the turn, but that really doesn't work well with the F1 car.  I realized that if I stayed off of the brakes and throttle while turning, I stuck to the road like glue, and then could accellerate OUT of the turn and be hauling bellybutton in no time.

It also helped to screw up 100 times and get to know the track REALLY well. :)  I finally won a race!

Played both F1 2002 and Grand Prix 4.

GP4 is the best F1 racing sim there is, nothing even comes close..soon as i played GP4 i threw F1 2002 in the garbage (really).

GP4 has better graphics, awsome physics and weather modeling, pretty much everything is better then F1 2002. Im simply amazed with GP4. Make sure you have GF3 or GF4 at least.

Interesting.  You are the first person to say that - everyone else says the exact opposite - that GP4 is a pile of trash, and F1 2002 is the best yet...

GPL, even if its old sas hell, sure rocks.
Brake to the turn, Open the 6 double-barrel Dell'Ortos (or Webers, not sure) by kicking the gas pedal and let the car slide to the lane with better grip.
Works in every 10th time, other 9 times I just find my self spinning around grass...  Anyway when it works it sure makes me feel nice  :D

BTW I'm using Thrustmaster Force Feedback GT "Ferrari" wheel with shifter; There were no buttons for gears in 1968.  After 30 mins my hands are so weak I can't lift them off from the wheel :D
