Lockups
« on: September 21, 2002, 07:37:08 PM »
Cant go 10 mins without lockups. Lockup sound loop hmmm sounds sometimes last person speaking on voice looping.

xp1800
21.89 drivers geforce 3 ti500
audigy player
512 ddr 2100
k7t266 board
windows xp

tried latest creative pack for audigy. man what a fanny about that was. Uninstalled drivers before using new pack. Lost most things. Dunno whats up. Driving me crazy. Suspecting HW but case is overclockers uk alloy case with 2 case fans and fancy cpu cooler. not overclocked.

This is really sudden and no recent AH downloads. Game has become unplayable. Jeez I feel a cpomplete reinstall coming on which wont help if there is a hardware prob. I am too busy for all this.Grr:mad:

y'know i played games on my old intel pIII600 for ages without any hassle. Thought i better geta dedicated games machine and seperate fun from work. Spent  1300 quid on above box, share montor keyboard mouse and now it gives me all this grief!

I wonder why AMD processors are cheap, im beginning to suspect why!

I don't know if you'll get sick of this 'non-guru' trying to help but here goes again.
I'd check a few basics like IRQ conflicts and possibly the position of some cards in the box. I'm not sure if it would effect that but a newer video driver might be in order also, an WHQL 29.80 or higher maybe.

Rereading- then again if this started so suddenly the positions of the cards wouldn't have started this and I can't see the system changing the IRQs arbitrarily.
Now I'm not so sure I should have even posted anything at all, but the urge to assist was to strong.

I tried the new Audigy driver pack, but it screwed up AH Voice.
I think I'll reinstall AH again.  Does anyone know why I would be getting more and more frequent lockups?  I would suspect HW but other games seem to be ok (MOHAA eg). I have a funny feeling about sound and AH Voice.??

If it doesn't cure it I'd try re-installing DX8.1b and re-installing your sound drivers.  Since that's what you changed, I assume the problem is with the sound drivers.

Note, it's best not to update drivers "just because".  If your games are working fine, don't update any drivers, your just asking for problems.  Wait until there is something that won't work properly or gives you problems, then look to updated drivers for the solution.  You'll save yourself a lot of hassles that way. :)

Thx Lephturn. Yes, i strongly suspect the sound system. I also suspect hardware. Random loackups getting more frequent sounds very like heat. I have a coolermaster case with 2 case fans tho and a thermalrite hsf on th XP 1800. Still??

Your advice on drivers is right. I am sticking with 21.81 detonators as im unconvinced they are causing problems.

About DX 8.1b. I tried to install this on XP asd nothing seemed to happen. There was stuff about 8.1b not being suitable for XP?

Quote from Microsoft site:

Windows 2000 operating system. On Windows XP, you will need to download the latest Windows XP Service Pack. Please see Knowlede Base article - Q322389 How to Obtain the Latest Windows XP Service Pack

I did that, but does this supersede DX8.1b?  What do they mean.My DX version is still regular 8.1

Empty DirectX setup folder?

You should have a shortcut to the DirectX applet in it.

Check your System32 folder for DxDiag.exe, if it reports errors you might be able to roll XP back to a good configuration.

Minor thought, and I use Win98se not XP, but I can lower my Sound hardware aceleration through Control panel and then Multimedia and the Audio tab. That 'may' help pinpoint it to the sound. I also assume any onboard sound is disabled if you have it.
