Sound card questions
« on: September 21, 2002, 09:42:56 PM »
What is a good, cheap sound card that is compatible with just about everything? I've had it with Creative, so forget any of those. Don't need many features...just a decent card that can put out sound to four speakers and play some jams.

Also....I'm using my onboard AC97 sound right now and getting a bunch of crackling, pops, and hiss when I play AH. It's fine in any other app, just problems with AH. Any ideas?

Unfortunately, creative is pretty much it for game compatibility.  Yep, they SUCK.  I've also had it with them.  I built my new machine on an nForce board which has fantastic onboard sound, it even has SPDIF ports and stuff and will do 5.1.  It's pretty cool.  I don't know if there is an equivalent sound card, but I know most of the other options like Phillips and things have problems with some games such as BF:1942.

If only nVidia would start making add-in sound cards...

Well, I fixed my hissing and cracking by turning down my hardware acceleration a notch.

Heard people saying good things about Turtle Bay sound cars...anyone have one?

I have a Turtle Beach Montego II which works fine with AH.  That's a very old out of date card though.

Search some test results of Hercules Fortissimo II and III soundcards; Their CPU usage is prety much same as Audigy has (= almost none when compared to other cards).
