one of those sweet moments a little tainted....
« on: September 22, 2002, 03:09:56 PM »
flying along in my 190 dora at 22k I got bounced by a rather doggedly determined spitfire pilot who managed to damage me piece by piece as we tangled all the way to the deck.Several desperate attempts to force him into an overshoot are close to working but never quite come off.In the end as i try to run the engine finally quit and i attempted to ditch. The spit flew in and deservedly finished me off before i robbed him of the kill by ditching out.I SFOX on a great attack and fight even though i had my bellybutton handed me which is as it should be right?
We talk over the fight and with mutual 's we both go about starting our next fights.
This is how AH should be i feel.

Well the next sortie i was at 18k and i happen upon a P51d about 2k below.I roll inverted and dive on him.He breaks but i mange to predict his path and caught him with a decent burst of my 20mm which i expect to see take him down but he is only damaged in the engine (oil leak) and he breaks and heads for 2 dots further SE.
I still have some alt advantage so i press on hoping to get another shot at him before the other 2 aircraft can help him but then i spot they are also both P51d's! Erk i think, bet this is a squad of pony flyers!
I then break off my chase of the original p51 as i notice both the other two trying to pass under me for a zoom up into my rear hemisphere.I chop throttle and pull a hard turning into a full throttle diveing attack. The lead pony was the easiest to attack but i opted to try and hit the wingman first with the hope of getting a shot on both.Again a very tricky lead snap shot hits the wingman which also blows smoke but doesnt go down! The fight turns into an energy fight where its important i dont get greedy as even with the oil hit on 2 ponies they, as you well know, can fly for ages in this state and to make matters worse 2 190s are headed in too.Taking turns at hitting each pony in turn i get solid hits on the 3rd pony and again its oil or radiator is hit.The 190s get too close for comfort and as the ponies run i cant afford to chase them down.
So there i was forced to break off of a 3 on 1 fight (5 on 1 if you count the 190s) and feeling great about how i managed to rope and outhink the ponies i send a out over ch 1 and ask who the 3 ponies were.
Nothing is said apart from joke after joke from people who are well known pony flyers. Then still others saying im just fishing for a pat on the back..Some say it was not them others say it was the 412th, then say theres no such squad after i AGAIN them thinking it was serious.real nice. After all that I didnt even want to know who they were and quite frankly now i dont care, the respect is lost.

This isnt the whole reason i play the game but when I do well and give a I have to say it I expect an acknowledgment in return as i consider it good sportsmanship.I have always been of the opinion that p51 flyers are a bit annoying for their constant running tactics when the fight turns against them but this sort of thing confirms it for me.

Pony flyers suck :D. Not for their ability but for their attitude to the game. When someone beats you against the odds would it really hurt so much to say well done?

kinda says something when Sfox, in a SPIT shows more of the spirit of gamesmanship than a squad of pony pilots.Maybe its time i changed my mind about spits,la7s and niks? maybe they arent spoiling the MA with overuse after all, maybe the spirit of AH i learned to like so much is being lost elsewhere.I gave SFOX the because he deserved it and i hope it made that nights flying just a little better for him for recieving the acknowledgement of his skill.those pony flyers made mine just a little worse. thnks

alt-r  resolves anonymity quite nicely i find.

;)

fwiw, they may have had ch1 squelched.  or perhaps simply too embarrassed, or maybe even too new to have figured out radio.

Hazed they probably did have CH1 squelched.

Rude, Toad and myself were up in P51s at the time but I doubt we were in the same sector.  If you had handed us our tulips we wouldnt have ignored your requests for ID and would gladly have saluted you.

The success was in beating back the 51s.  Regardless of who they were or their failure, whether intentional or not, to respond to your inquiries.  A hurt ego can cause some to be as silent as others are obnoxioulsy loud.

A is what it is all about..

I always give a for a good fight if I lose. Don't usually when I win, have got some snide comebacks doing that..

A good fight is a good fight regardless of outcome, but that isn't a widely held concept..in my experience.

WOTAN....tnx, I didnt know you can view other players handles in the film view.

I'm surprised that AH doesnt count a ditch as a kill.... thats a bit retro.... WBIII has counted them as kills for years now.

Last night, I was flying my SBD, and figured I could help my bomber score a tad by pounding a Knit radar factory now behind our lines. On my way back, several enemy fighters got in the way. As a 190 rolled in from my 6, I headed for the deck (from about 7k). This virtually assures an overshoot when I dump the flaps and roll. However, while watching the 190, I failed to notice the hill directly to my front and augered. Grief was flying the 190 and we both had a good laugh at my folly.

Earlier, flying the SBD, I chased down and killed some guy in an F4U-4. I had about 5k of altitude in my bank, and he had killed his E trying to get a shot at another Rook. This guy did not acknowledge my , probably too annoyed at the circumstances (who can blame him?). At least he didn't whine or carry on as some do.

Generally, it is always good practice to salute the enemy pilot, win or lose. Unless of course, you are still heavily engaged. A kind word goes a long way.

Rude, Yeager and I were up but we weren't involved in that fracas with you.

BTW, we TOLD you it wasn't us when you were asking about it. Are you saying you didn't believe us then and still don't?

We were by the Bish HQ; where were you? You never said. I think one of us would have noticed if we took damage that caused smoke, dont' you?

So, tell me: are you generalizing here that only P-51 flyers run when the fight turns against them? That the other fast aircraft in the planeset stay and fight when the fight turns against them?

This sort of thing confirms something for me as well.

I enjoy flying and fighting against you in the arena; your a good stick. However, last night I'm absolutely sure we didn't meet in the engagement you describe.

I don't enjoy reading this stuff.

brendo it depends where the guy ditches. If you ping a guy and he ditches closer to an nme field you will get kill.

If he is closer to his you wont get a kill.

If he ditches or bails near an nme field, with out getting pinged from another player (from ack) or the player that pinged him is dead and no other folks are around he will get "captured"

Near his field he will get "you have bailed successfully"

To see the guys name on film you must open the film in the  Stand alone film viewer (not the one on the ah clipboard).

Open program/aceshigh/aces high film viewer. Once you open the film viewer on the right hand side it will list the names of all folks in range. By double clicking on one of the names you jumop to their plane.
