Dusk/Dawn/Night Fix it Or Ditch it
« on: September 24, 2002, 08:14:04 PM »
Whine warning.

ok here's the deal, dusk/dawn/night as is, is too short to run any kind of mission during, and the only effect is darker colors.  Night can effectivly be canceled out by cranking up your monitors brightness.  Dusk and dawn are a bit tougher to deal with, and so limit vision more.

During all of these icons, still show 6k out.  Night bombing is almost impossible(And bombing isnt much good period, but thats another issue)

We should either have a usefull dusk/night/dawn, or not have them at all.  Since they're useless for flying in, but annoying, why have them?  Dusk and dawn are far more annoying than the night, and last much longer(Does this make sense?)

Please, either make dusk/night/dawn tactically usefull, not just a time to log off for a break, or remove it completly.  Short-range icons and a longer night.  The night could be possibly lengthened by making dusk and dawn shorter, and extending the night in the middle.  That way the people who dont want to fly at night could still log off, without having to wait any longer.

This halfassed night thats in place now is annoying to the people who dont like having a nighttime, and useless to those who would like occasional night-flights.  How about catering to one group, instead of neither?

Great points Innominate. If the compelling argument is that we can't have a night longer than a few minutes because people log, why have any night at all??? All it has become is a needless irritant.

Give us a real night or lets have our arcade-game constant sunny midday all the time.

I hate night but for some reason when htc did away with night some folks posted again and again that they wanted it back. Though you would be hard pressed to find them ingame. During night most people adjust their gamma to make it "not like night".

The dashboard glow and the illuminated airfields, towns and factories what we have is hardly "night". For those who dont adjust their monitor either icon chase or log.

In AH all planes are night fighters in that they have inflight radar.

Dusk and dawn, while they look "pretty" are, for me anyway, terrible for gameplay. I mostly log during these times.

Night is pointless because of gmma adjusting.  I've always said that.  Night in AH is and always has been a useless irritant IMO.  The less of it the better  :)

aaaah, but I love the dawn... It nevre fails to please me to see those glowing ornage colors etc etc... lovely...

I would like to see the radar lowered and night fighters enabled tho.

P-61, Beaufighter, Ju88G, He219 etc etc... with a radar screen for the gunner....

I'll be going against the grain here, but I kind of like the dark sometimes - though I am glad it doesn't last but a few minutes too.   I think this is one of those hardware things - guys with the leading edge equipment aren't effected like guys with more generic OEM stuff.

What I find most irritating about night, and even cloud overcast, is the fact that the colors on the clipboard also dim out and at some point you can't even see friendly cons anymore without cranking the zoom up.

Could we please make it that the clipboard does not dim?

when it is nite time people log.   The people who lobby for nite never fly it.   It is like the "axis vs alleid" or RPS thing... or even... "we need a stuka"   sounds ok but no one like or uses it.

Every plane in AH is NOT a nightfighter, yeah we may have inflight radar but only from friendly fields whose radar is up. A nightfighter had it's OWN radar.
Not lobbying either way just making a small point.

When night existed, I liked using it for PT, Vehicle, and Bomber raids - the kind of things where not being easily seen is an asset. I usually also turned tracer off. Unfortunately my new monitor has lousy gamma correction so I can't make night go like most other pilots.

The point about the range icons severely limiting the usefulness of night are good ones. Perhaps someday when we have a range of night-fighters (the Uhu and the P-61 would be a good start) available and we can actually see the flames from a bomber's exhaust stacks, we have onboard radar showing height as well as range,  and the Icons are limited to say within a few hundred yards, then it'll be nice to have night back.

Hey, it'd be worth having real night just to get some Schrage Musik equipped planes!

And this by itself is why night is a bad idea in a game that we all pay the same amount for.

So how would one counter the ability of some monitors to adjust gamma?  Would adjusting the alpha of the enemy based on distance work?

I can do without any of the "night features" entirely. As soon as I see it coming on I log off. I have so little time to play that I won't waste any of it during this time. I am not interested in a recreation of WW2, I just want to fly, fight and have fun.
