I was lined up on a "bounce" of a low spit. He spotted me coming and just as I got about 1.5k out he reversed quickly and attempted the HO. I knew this was going to happen so I went vertical knowing he had burned most, if not all, his e on the reversal. The spit tried to follow, but I kept going up, engaging WEP and keeping an eye behind me. The closest he got was about 750, but the distance got greater very quickly. I think he must have been near a stall when he realised what was happening. I came back over the top and hit him with a burst just behing his canopy. He crashed a few moments later..giving me my first kill.

I climbed back up to take a look around...and here comes a low P38. Almost the identical engagement on him...although I wasn't able to rope him quite so easily. He tried to HO me too but I ended up getting him with a high angle deflection shot.

Wasn't able to land these kills, but I didn't care...I'm finally getting the hang of how to deal with the horrible HO dweebs.

I knew you'd get it. You'll find it getting easier and easier too. Once you start to look at the other guys' HO attempt as a mistake he's making in ACM it just gets better.

I even actually "remembered" that I was carrying a drop tank and got rid of it just as I was diving on the spit.

Toad...yup, I can see that it will get easier. Going for an HO should really ONLY be used in a desparate situation...kinda like the one I squeaked about in that old pre-Con post.

WTG Curval. I generally don't HO on the first pass. After the "obligatory" non-firing 1st pass, it's anything goes in my opinion. How do you all feel about that? Agree/disagree?

Fester once said on this board that if a new guy (or rookie) wanted to do something aggressive in a ho then immelman.

Lephturn has a good article on his site about avoiding the ho.

In my experience in a horizontal head on situation that by going up most guys flat turn to their right. It gets easy to pitchback and get umm.

Theres always that 1 guy you will run into that is using the ho, just like you are, to set you up.

As you go up and look over your shoulder you see him in a vert climb as well. Here its all about "e". I always know it will be a tough fight when this happens.

Same with a scissor. You look back and see the bad guy going up to avoid overshooting. Voss got me this way. He was in a temp and I in a d9. I was hunting goons when I turned to an nme base and seen his temp. I was otd and when I made a run he went up and dropped in behind me. I wanted to drag him away because the nme base had a few other cons up.

But on mindinao there rarely any flat ground and he caught up fast. I cut throttle to 75% and broke hard left then right. As I look back the temp didnt want any of that and went up. I bled my e and quickly died.

My squadmate drunky got his first clear "rope'a'dope" the other day. He was excited as well.

Yeah, I was smiling when I read the first post here; I thought about that whole pre-con thread.

Well, here's the keys to the "HO Whine Response Ambulance".

Next time there's a terrible HO whine, you get to fire it up, turn on the lights and drive over to the scene and help those folks.

Just so you know you can fight in the 190a5 with the drop tank on and not lose much performance at all. Just keep her in the vertical. She drinks gas fast so I always get my first kill or 2 with the tank on, unless I get bounced and have to go defensive....

Just a related note. I cant figure out why they didnt give the Spit14 the same magic 1 ping HO ability as the other spits. Was there some real life reason for this? Or is it just a game play consession?

Actually, I've found that if I EXPECT a HO on the initial pass every time I meet an adversary, it's not too hard to avoid. It's sorta like two wrestlers sizing each other up as they circle round th mat. If the other guy looks like he's gonna HO me, I can usually dance outta th way right before he/she draws a good bead on me. I personnaly think it's a cheap shot on the first pass, but I know some thinks it's perfectly legit. And so since I seldom know for sure who it is in the other plane at first, I'm always prepared for it.
