need abit of help
« on: October 07, 2002, 02:12:44 PM »
hey fellas, I've been fiddling with the terrain editor, so that I can then move onto the skins, but I'm having a problem. When I place a small aire field, I cant seem to position  it in any way so that the runway doesnt touch the grid lines. I'm sure you can alter the size of the grids, but I'm going crosseyed at the moment and was hoping someone might be able to help :) Cant wait to start the skinning lol.

In the bottom of the TE, turn on: Snap and Grid. Now, just click the middle of a gird, and the snap option you selected will automatically take you to the center of that grid.

-edit - Set snap to 2640 if it isn't already

One more thing, make sure that you lay a feild down a gird that is level, and the  8 girds around it are all the same level too.

why do you have to have so many grids the same level around it? can u put anything else in those grids? I understand that when you make the map you have to have a HQ, and so I did. When i was testing it out offline, I tried straffing the HQ. I noticed that some of the buildings were rotating and appeared to be shooting aa. As I straffed, the game crashed. The HQ was placed fairly close to the field, and the shore.  Is this glitch occuring due to not having enough same level tiles around the objects? Sorry for all the questions. Just learning the TE, but having fun :)

edit: the feild ack seemed to be opperating correctly, and the game was fine when I straffed it.

I am not sure about the tiles around your feild thing, but when I put an airfeild on 1 tile that was 3k, and the surrouding tiles were a different alt, I had problems. Same thing, objets appearing on werid angles. To fix it I just made the surrounding tiles the same alt. Not sure why this happens....

you need to run an object report and check for errors.

You want what ever structures you place in the terrain on level ground.

8 grid squares gives you a better transition then having a field in a hole or on a raised "platform".

leveling an area is easy enough. Set your alt and inc alt and mark the area you want "leveled" by hold the left mouse button and dragging over the area then right click.

newguy.. by the 8 surrounding grids I think he meant the 8 surrounding POINTS.
the whole grid is 9 points...vertices, whatever.
just make sure that the whole grid is level (all 9 points) and that the object (HQ, Field, etc) is placed in such a way as not to cross the grid lines.

on straffing the hq.. make sure you have the object properties set correctly.  you can verify all this with an object report.

Hmm, just ran an object report, and it comes up empty. I'll try adding more tiles around the HQ, or just moving it. Thanks for all the help. I'll be back I'm sure, especially when I get onto the skinning. BTW, do you guys use the GIMP? I am just playing with it right now and was wondering if any had had success with it?

Woo hoo, I have a working terrain. Adding those extra tiles fixed it all up. About those tiles, you can obviously add your own, is there a limit to how many you can have? This must be how NUTTZ makes all his cool maps, cuz I dont see any of the tiles he has  anywhere in the TE :) Well, off to learn how to skin planes now!

7 main tiles...
terr0000 water: ( tiles w/any tile *) see amendment*
terr0001 grass: (tiles w/grassy rock/farm/rock/forest)
terr0002 grassy rock: (tiles w/ grass/rock/forest/snow
terr0003 farm: ( tiles w/grass/rock/forest)
terr0004 rock: (tiles w/grass/farm/forest)
terr0005 forest: ( tiles w/grass/grassy rock/farm/rock)
terr0016 snow: ( tiles w/ grassy rock)

those are how and what each main tile will transitional tile with. Once these tiles are made, the rest of the tiles are easily made from a combination of these.

now the transitional tiles are as follows first style is the Main or center of the tile the second is the outside edges of the tile.

terr0006 grass/grassy rock
terr0007 grass/farm
terr0008 grass/rock
terr0009 grass/forest
terr0010 rock/farm
terr0011 grassy rock/rock
terr0012 grassy rock/forest
terr0013 farm/rock
terr0014 farm/forest
terr0015 rock/forest
terr0016 SNOW
terr0017 grassy rock/snow
terr0018 water/grass
terr0019 water/grass ( water running NW to SE)
terr0020 water/grass (water running NE to SW)

* Water can tile with any tile you choose. Grass(terr0001 is the prefered tile)
BUt water will tile with any tile. I usually make 2 tiles that have the same edges and use them both to tile with water to break up the sterility of the water/land tile. You can see this in Perdonia and Tunisia maps.
