This is for F4UDOA's F4U takeoff thread

I posted this once before but it seemed to get lost in the shuffle.  If you doubt a fully-loaded F4U's ability to get off a carrier deck, download and watch.

I am not making any claims as to whether the AH flightmodel is accurate or not.  I am posting this merely to show that a fully-loaded F4U CAN take off without using gamey tricks (rollback, wep, etc).  As the film shows, the plane gets airborne but it IS rather sluggish.

This film is from the same version of AH we are using now; I made it fairly recently (maybe a month or so ago).

Attachment should follow:

I don't understand whats so difficult about taking off in a heavy f4u.  Are people trying to climb off of the deck?

The trick is, don't expect the plane to fly when you leave the deck. You're flying a brick, all you need to do is fight to keep it from falling too far as it picks up speed.

CC JAB,

I found your film in another post.

Freaked me out but I did what you did and it worked.

I still think there are some FM issues but it is not impossible. In fact I did it multiple times yesterday. The Trim settings are key.

Also take off as if you are flying to the right. As the F4U wants to stall left badly.

Manual trim should be pre-set six degrees right... six clicks, in every TO, Field or CV.

Also, it helps to set the deadband to nearly zero and up the rudder settings to 90 so theres little "play" in the controls. it aids in not bleeding too much E on TO as well as creating less counter yaw.

Trim?  I leave combat trim on.

My trick?   A magic feather!

The only trick is to fight the plane and keep it from hitting the ocean like it wants to.  All you need to do is drop flaps, and raise your gear when you leave the deck.
