UDP Lost Switching to TCP - Caused by NIC?
« on: October 09, 2002, 12:47:15 AM »
Ever since they put in that patch to fix the invisible planes, I haven't been able to play AH for more than 15 minutes at a time.

I don't have trouble with any other network games like America's Army or Ghost Recon or Live For Speed.  Just AH.

After 15 minutes or so, I invariably get the "UDP Lost, Switching to TCP" message, followed by "Host Connection Lost".

Initially I had Earthlink DSL with a 2Wire gateway with firewall, and I assumed that I had to open some ports to make it work.  But the firewall on the 2Wire unit wouldn't let me open enough ports, so I bought a shiny new Linksys DSL router.

But I still had the same problem, even if I opened thousands of ports, put in port triggers, or even if I DMZ'ed the machine.

I also tried connecting the DSL modem directly to my computer, and still the same problem.  I even tried using different brands of DSL modem (Zyxel and Speedstream).

So then I figured it must be the ISP's problem.

This weekend I moved into a new place and got a new ISP.  I now have AT&T cable internet.  There is no firewall or router.

And I still have the UDP lost discoes!

So it ain't the ISP, it ain't the CPE, it ain't the router, and it ain't the firewall.  The only constant is the computer.

So I figure it must be something in my Windows setup or a problem with my NIC.  Anybody got any ideas?

System config:
Win 2k Pro
DX 8.1
Asus A7N266-C (nForce 415)
Athlon XP 2100+
512 MB PC2100
Geforce4 4600 (Abit)
Linksys LNE100TX(v5) Fast Ethernet Adapter
Hauppauge WinTV PCI

I have the same issues funkedup. They started for me 2 patched ago also. I've tried multiple ISP's, type of connection, reinstalled everything several times. The only things similar in our setups is CPU brand, DirectX version and RAM capacity. I've also tried the same router/no router trials.

I think OS can be ruled out. My latest theory is sound card. I've noticed that if I don't transmit on VOX, my UDP drops (followed by instant disconnect) are rare. I'm using a SB emulation, very old, sound card and will change it before this weekend.

I'll let you know results and give the 'no transmit' thing a try...

Funked, at this point I think I would pick up my cordless, dialup Skuzzy and sit down at the computer for a long debug session. ! :)  Seriously, it looks like you've tried most everything I can think of.

Can you borrow a modem and try a 56k dialup for a few days?

Might narrow things down a bit.

Just FYI this has cleared up with my new ISP.
The one disco I had with the new ISP was attributable to a connection sharing issue (landlord's son pulled the wrong plug).
Thx all.
