its either a very clever pop-up made to look like one of those DOS instant message, or its a real one.

Do you have a good firewall installed? update it!

That's pretty cool, I've never seen that before.  What site did you get that at?  It's possible that you have some spyware on your PC (GATOR, KAZAA, BONIZI Buddy) that's 'helping' them find you.

Dingbat is right.
You probably have some sort of spyware trojan broadcasting your IP.
Make sure you have a good firewall (Norton/Zone Alarm) installed and updated.

What the heck does that have to do with the price of beans on friday night?

Just cause win98 doesn't have the messenger service doesn't meaning they can't use winpopup on those boxes.

Actually, you can disable it in Windows XP.

In Windows 98 SE, you cant.
So your reason for hanging just became a reason to upgrade.

Read the article I posted guys.  It's not a popup ad.  It's not spyware.  It's somebody scanning IP's and sending messages via the built-in Messenger Service.  To stop it all you have to do is disable the Messenger Service.  Adaware or closing port 139 won't prevent it.

All you have to do is edit the correct Win98 INF and it becomes an option in the Windows Add/Remove software applet.  :D

Win98SE can be made to install in under 70mb if you know how, Win Me is around 120mb if you know how to use INF hacks.

One of these days I'll get to work on gutting that bloated POS XP.

I was wondering how long it was going to take for someone started using net send to spam windows users.

I used to work with a guy who would use it rather than IM or email and it always annoyed the hell out of me so I now I always disbale messaging.
