My DSL cable is very long.  Does this screw things up in terms of delay???  I have noticed quite a long delay and thought that I might be better off moving the computer next to the outlet...

Yes, Cable length does matter, Max length between the Splitter & DSL modem should be no more than 20 meters and only use twisted pair, anything over 20 meters and you will begin to see a drop.

But the shorter the beter!

CAT5 maxdistance is 100 meters.  Shouldn't make to much of a problem up to that unless it's documented by an ISP...  I'm open to a link to prove otherwise.  Also all CAT cables should be TP.
