when it 1st came out in 1934 it was probably one of the better fighters (better than the P-26, the USAAC's best fighter at the time), certainly it was no match for the I16, which was contemporary and was ~100 kph faster

Yeah that was the great thing about the fairey swordfish, and why they didnt loose a single one in attacking the bismark!
