Author Topic: How do you know if your Windows CD is porked? (Read 741 times)

My new computer came with Windows Me.

In order to "cure" my system of CTDs, I have tried installing Windows 98. Never got it to install properly. I also tried Win Me again a couple of times because I thought that maybe the 98 CD had a fatal scratch. Me wouldn't load properly either. Both had all kinds of errors.

Both the 98 and Me Cds have a few very slight scratches, but I figured the HD was bad (I have other reasons to think so as well).

So I just installed the new Wester Digital 40GB 7200 rpm HDD.
Win 98 is porked on it already. Just re-formatted and trying Me.

Could my errors be coming from a bad CD?

Fatal Exception OD has occured at 014F:00003834

Invalid Vxd dynamic link called vwn32(01) + 00000714 to device 0009 service 1

Registry repair results:
Windows found an error in your system files and was unable to fix them, try deleting some files ... bla bla bla.

File system 32 bit
Virtual Memory 32 bit

Sec Slave drive ATAPI Incompatible (press F1 to resume, I gotta do this every time on start up.)

new power supply

Hitache DVD/CD

BTW, I', a moron when it comes to puter stuff, so please spell out the obvious if you have any advice.

I use ME and ive never had an AH problem with it. Ive been pretty lucky with ME in general I guess as most will tell you its not the best gaming platform without a lot of work.

I dont do a lot to it but it all seems to work fine.

As for your CD, I dont know. But as one computer dummy to another, i thought id get in now before the XP geeks rattle your cage about ME

I'll see how everything runs on Me before I think about another OS. Too poor to throw money around.

@^%#**$@#$^ Windows Me is porked. I downloaded a *&%%&*& Win Me update, there were some errors and now on start up I get a solid blue screen after the password (cancel) dialog box!

EEVEN IN SAFE MODE!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH H!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't *^$^&*&%$% win.

2.5 months without playing! WTF!

Drop ur system dwn to 1 stick of ram, not sure how many ya have but try em all one at a time see if sys comes up alright, if ya got a bad stick of ram anywhere in the bunch ur screwed till ya get it out of there, if ya cant get it to work and can get on line dwnload DocMemory and test each stick alone in the first slot and see what ya get.

Also sounds like you have a device in your ATA (IDE 3 or 4 ATA/66) that should be running in the IDE slot 1 or 2, fast harddrives ATA/66 etc would go in slot IDE 3 or 4, CD's would go in slot IDE 1 or 2, put ur cd is the fast ATA/66 and your system isnt going to like it at all. You should also use the 80 wire ribbon cable for any ATA/66 and the 40 wire cable for the regular ATA/33 cd type of devices they look similat but are very different, the 40 wire ribbon cable will look a little larger or coarse like.

Never used ME so I'm not sure about the following !

If ME is NTFS you cant install Fat32 over it ( Win98 se ), you must FDISK and reformat if it is NTFS to get it to load FAT32.

But make sure you have that new Winchester drive in the IDE 3 or 4 slot on your mother board and are using the 80 wire ribbon cable for it.

You must also use the shorting straps ( little black shorts on the back of the hard drive ) to tell your system which hard drive is primary and which one is secondary, if their both pinned for primary the sys is gonna have problems. So check that also !

Windows ME can't use NTFS, can't see it either. Only NT, 2000 and XP can use NTFS.

The problems you have won't come from a bad CD, if the CD is bad you wouldn't be able to install it.

Ok, how many HD's do you have in it? I am guessing this has got to do with teh DVD though.

Secondary slave drive incompatible, if I am not wrong on this, it might be this that cause some sort of a conflict in Windows and thus is your problem to blue screen of death and various other error messages.

I am not sure it is the CD/DVD, however, if the problems don't go away, it is worth a try to remove that DVD and replace it with a normal CD (take the one from old computer for example).

Don't know if you build your computers your self, I do, never and problems with this kind of stuff.

I think I read in the other forum that you order it cheap from some internet place, I'd be carefull with this, not only do you have a good chance of getting stuff that's not compatible with eachother, but you may also get stuff that isn't really the "real stuff". Piracy doesn't only occure in the software world, there are allso lots of copys in the hardware buisiness that just type a good name such as AMD on a bad CPU.

Dare spend some more money on, it will be a bit more expensive but you're almost always sure to get the goos stuff. Best way it to buy it from a small computer store or similair where you can get personal help.

with amd and ge4 you need at last strong 300 W and up !!!

experienced this kinda problems , the power suply was not inaf strong !!!

I've been wondering about the DVD as well. Your casting even greater doubt on it too. For $40 I should probably replace it too.

One of the new things I put in it. Its got a 300 Watt Antec power supply, brand new.

The instal guide talked about that. it had a default pin/jumper.
My choices were: Cable Select (CSEL) - Default setting Requires special cable, included...

and single... If the drive you are installing is theonly drive on the system, which it is, but it doesn't explain that cable sellect is not the only either... so I'm not sure...

I did the FAT32 thing and the HDD is plugged into the blue one like the install guide said.
