Does anyplace repair CH sticks?
« on: October 15, 2002, 01:13:10 PM »
Hello,
I have an old CH HOTAS set-up that I really really like. Sadly the stick is spiking badly (I think that's what it is doing) Without moving the stick, the airplane jumps around the sky  :(
Si I was just wondering if there was anyplace that repaired-refurbished the sticks.... I am to technically inept to atempt it myself.  Thanks

They sell all the spare parts you might need here:  http://www.chproducts.com/shop/parts.html

Almost certainly your spiking is due to a faulty potentiometer.  They are quite easy to replace, and I think you should give it a whirl.

If you live in the SF bay area I can fix it for you.

Replacing the pots is a piece-o-cake.  I've replaced my F-16 Pro stick pots 3 or 4 times, and my throttle and rudders once or twice each.  Order them from CH and do it yourself, it'll work like new.  The only real trick is finding the screws, they hid them under the rubber pads on the bottom.  Keep it upside down while you work and take it apart gently and slowly so that you can see how it goes together.  I mark the pots before I unpluge them so that I get the wires on the right tab, I think there's only 2 per.  If you get in a bind, just post on the BB and someone will help you out.

Trust yourself, you really can do this, it's pretty easy.

Good lord, $10 a pot?!  And I thought ThrustMaster was getting bad by making you buy repair "kits" that include extra crap you don't need.  At least CH's shipping is reasonable.

One nice thing about the CH repair kits is that they include rubber feet to replace the ones you will have to remove to disassemble the stick.

OK, I will give it a shot.  Thank you so much for the help and suggestions.
I do not live near San Francisco, but I do truly appreciate your offer.

... Pedals on the other hand... No, the idea is the same - replace pots - it's putting them back together again which is no fun:). Back in the good old days they were shipping this stuff free of charge. I still have a couple of 8-way switches lurking around somewhere - I wanted to try replacing 4-ways ones, asked for them and good folks at CH just sent them to me...

The grass was greener too ;)

As a first port of call though I'd try to clean them. They (pots) are dead easy to take apart/put together again. You can clean the contacts and contact area with any alchohol based cleaning fluid and in many cases it solves the spiking (caused by dirt/dust).
