NIC Conflict with AH? Is this possible?
« on: October 09, 2002, 12:49:09 AM »
Ever since they put in that patch to fix the invisible planes, I haven't been able to play AH for more than 15 minutes at a time.

I don't have trouble with any other network games like America's Army or Ghost Recon or Live For Speed.  Just AH.

After 15 minutes or so, I invariably get the "UDP Lost, Switching to TCP" message, followed by "Host Connection Lost".

Initially I had Earthlink DSL with a 2Wire gateway with firewall, and I assumed that I had to open some ports to make it work.  But the firewall on the 2Wire unit wouldn't let me open enough ports, so I bought a shiny new Linksys DSL router.

But I still had the same problem, even if I opened thousands of ports, put in port triggers, or even if I DMZ'ed the machine.

I also tried connecting the DSL modem directly to my computer, and still the same problem.  I even tried using different brands of DSL modem (Zyxel and Speedstream).  No dice.

So then I figured it must be the ISP's problem.

This weekend I moved into a new place and got a new ISP.  I now have AT&T cable internet.  There is no firewall or router.

And I still have the UDP lost discoes!

So it ain't the ISP, it ain't the CPE, it ain't the router, and it ain't the firewall.  The only constant is the computer.

So I figure it must be something in my Windows setup or a problem with my NIC.  Anybody got any ideas?

System config:
Win 2k Pro
DX 8.1
Asus A7N266-C (nForce 415)
Athlon XP 2100+
512 MB PC2100
Geforce4 4600 (Abit)
Linksys LNE100TX(v5) Fast Ethernet Adapter
Hauppauge WinTV PCI

YOYO,

Yep, definately be looking at your pc for the trouble.

What service pack you running? make sure you have sp3.

Do you have dialup access also? If you don t remove it from windows setup.

Try another nic, they are cheap enuff. Get a good one if ya can.
3com makes the best for pc's imo. Also, try to keep the irq's seperate if at all possible. And you only need tcp/ip protocol for you nic, anything else can be removed.

  Good Luck

Yep I got another NIC I'm going to try today.
I do have SP3 with all the latest patches.  I have the latest drivers for everything in the system too.

Check out Speedguide

They have some tweaks you can try, also turn of QOS on your NIC and see what happens.  Unless Scuzzy is using it to help with connection data??

I've had problems with CTDs since about the time I changed to ADSL, using a 3com nic and Zyxel router. When my FE saw a lot of hit sprites (usually while straffing) I would often CTD.

I think I've cured it now though by moving my nic to a different PCI slot. Previously it was in slot 5, which shared an IRQ with the USB controller. Now it is in slot 2 which shares with the AGP slot and everything seems stable. I've been straffing everything in sight for the last few days with no CTDs.

Have you experimented with IRQ's funked?

Is anything sharing an IRQ with the NIC?
if so try and change it.
move the NIC or conflicting card if you have to

I usualy have this problem if the PCI sound card or built-in sound card codec (if part of the MB) is sharing an interupt with the NIC. I usually reserve an IRQ for separate  PCI sound cards in bios first by selecting the slot it is in and installing it on its own with the vid card of course before adding the NIC card or any others so the sound uses it's own IRQ alone. The others seem to share fine.

Check to see if sound is sharing.  You may be lucky by moving the cards around to a different slot to see if Windows assigns a diferent configuration for the IRQs, but thats not guaranteed on Plugand Pray. I would install them in the order of Vid card, PCI sound card first, assigning an interupt to the sound card slot in bios and once running then add the NIC and any other peripheral cards for Windows to assgn the irqs by PnP.

Just FYI this has cleared up with my new ISP.
The one disco I had with the new ISP was attributable to a connection sharing issue (landlord's son pulled the wrong plug).
Thx all!
