Armor penetration modeling...
« on: October 17, 2002, 12:04:56 AM »
...guys just a 'FYI' here:

An in-depth, ultra-realistic armor penetration model - if done correctly - is not something that can be 'whipped up in 2 months for the next release'.

Doing it correctly from the ground up is *crucial* - it's life or death to do it correct from the ground up for any simulation. Because if you don't, whenever you introduce guns and armor from a different 'era' you will be forced to do 'patch ups' to 'make everything feel right', and that can never lead to perfection...or even head towards perfection.

I speak from a little bit of experience here - I was part of the development team for Panzer Commander by SSI. We sat in real AFVs with working optics to model the gunsights correctly. We dug up insane amounts of data from the Imperial War Museum, Bundesarchiv, Russia, etc. In terms of realistic armor penetration modeling the only other thing that is close (and it's better, as it was done later) is Panzer Elite.

Trust me here when I say you should all be glad that 'realistic armor penetration modeling/physics' hasn't been 'promised' as part of a 'standard update' from the AH team.

It is a very, very difficult and complex thing to implement properly. There are no short cuts. If you want realism be prepared to wait a little.
