I have decided to build a new computer because my old one suddenly died.

I've gotten a new MB (ASUS A7V8X wRAID, sound, LAN) , new CPU (XP 2000+), new video card (Radeon 9700pro), new RAM and a new 350watt PS.

This replaces a GA7DX MB, ATHLON 1200, and a Gforce 2 Ultra.

It also runs 2 HD in RAID and Cable internet.

Since my old puter died without warning I had no chance to do any preperation for the upgrade and I am concerned what will happend with all the new stuff. I plan on using the Gforce 2 at first so I hope that will make the transition easier. And I would like to use the MB built in sound, RAID, and LAN.

Basically I would like to know what will happend when I turn this thing on given all the existing old software, and any basic guidence you guys can give regarding the inital software/BIOS setup in my situation.

Bro its a cake walk!I have the same MOBO, XP 2200 and an older gforce 2 card.

All i did was take the old MOBO out put the new one in plugged everything together  and walla ..... ran fine from the get go! (never reformatted the hard drive either left eveything on it!(winXP pro)

I suggest you dont hook it up raid style yet but just run your hard drives like A master and slave.!

Its a great board and the best thing about it is you dont flash the BOIS you install ASUS's program and it downloads and install the new BOIS for you.

When you first Boot go into BIOS right away and make sure your CPU / boot sequence / and ram settings are correct!

Im very curious as to what kinda FPS you get with that Video card in your system too.

one last Question what RAM did you BUY? i use the CORSAIR 3200 2.5 cls  I should have bought the 2cls(or what ever it is) but it was such a good deal i had to go for it!

If it were me, I would re-format the harddrive(s), (especially if you are not running Windows XP) for a major upgrade like this...

You might get away with it without re-formatting.

But you might not.

You can really run around in circles if you have probs with new componants without a fresh OS install.

PS: I think what would really be good for your upgrade is Windows XP if you don't already have it, and a 400 watt or better high quality power supply. I think you might be too close to the edge with the 350 watt and that video card, running raid, etc and still having room to grow... 'course the money supply will tell you what to do!

Stuff like that makes one hope you partitioned your HD smart, meaning your c: contains only system data and nothing else. :)

Displaycard isn't going to be a problem, your OS will boot to vga mode and you just install new drivers for the device. However mobo chipset changes may cause probs with OS.

If I were you, I'd simply set up the sucker and try to boot up. If the windoze starts, then run every driver available for the new setup and.. pray. :)

You don't want to start setting up raid at this time (unless its mirrored raid 1.)

Remember that with raid-0 your data is only half as safe as before.

How could I reformat the drives if the computer is not rebuilt yet?

I plan on reformatting everything after the machine is built, and also swithching from the current ME to Win2k or XP. Most likely 2k.

All I know about the RAM it's PC2700 by Samsung,  everything I read so far states PC3200 is not worth it. Is samsun RAM any good?


Whats a good 400+watt PS also?

I'm telling ya, XP is really, really swell, I'm not kidding ya!

Well, you would install your new motherboard, and new componants into your case. Hook it all up. Put your OS cd in your cd player. Then turn on the power. The bios will start up... choose the option to go to a command prompt. (diff boards are different on which key to press for this)

At the A:\ prompt type in "E:\" (or what ever letter your cd rom is.)

The "A" prompt will change to a "E:\"  prompt.

Type "SETUP" .... or  E:\SETUP.

The setup for the new OS will start up. In the begining of the process, you get an option to format and partition your drive.

After that, the actual install of files begin...

If you have Windows XP, it is so automatic...

If I were getting a new PS, I'd probably go for an Antec True-Power.

There should never be a need to reformat. Boot to a Command Prompt, rename the OS dirs and the key system files, then run the OS install.

I always reformat with a major upgrade. Just my .02... I'm not a computer consultant ;)

I would set it up and try to boot it.  If it boots, back up all the stuff you need to.  Then reformat the drive, pull everything out.  Put in your new vid card and enter your BIOS setup.  Disable the onboard sound and LAN.  Reinstall your OS.  Load up the 4-in-1s and reboot.  Install the video drivers and reboot. Then re-enter your BIOS and re-enable the onboard LAN.  Fire it up, load the drivers and set up network.  Reboot again.  Run Windows Update until you are completely up to date.  Reboot and enable the sound via the BIOS.  Install the drivers for that.  Reboot and then install each additional device one at a time.

The problem is that your motherboard loads drivers for all of the onboard functions.  When you switch to a new motherboard, it doesn't remove those old drivers.  That can cause conflicts.  The only time it would not is if your are replacing the motherboard with the exact same motherboard and replacing all of the same cards into the same slots.

If you do not do a full re-install, you will probably regret it later as your system will never really be stable.
