how to make it easier

Ok,

I am definitely not a graphics artist by any stretch of the imagination.  However, I figured I would make an effort at skinning my p51b.  I have read through the help files, and have managed to put together my first model.  All I did was to paint the upperside of the stabilzers red.  Now, here's my question.  I'm using Photoshop 7.0.1.  The way I "skinned" my stabilzer was to open up the texture file, flip the image vertically, and then basically go pixel by pixel over the stabilzer image painting it red.  Where the panel lines are, I painted over them a little darker shade of red.

Is there an easier way to do this?  Is there a way to make a "template" or something that is basically a layer with just panel lines, another that is insignia, and so on?  I mean, it would make sense to get your shape, paint it a base color, add some effects on top (especially for a "shiny silver"), add the panel lines, add the insignia and voila, your plane is skinned.

Can some of you veteren skinners offer me up a little help on this?

Thanks!

one way to see the panel lines is to do the ...show edges effect ..i think thats the one... then grayscale it then back to RGB and just do layers from there ... but im mostly useing photoshop 7 ... i dont use PSP7 much
