$@#!!! Microsoft!!!!!
« on: October 20, 2002, 10:37:33 PM »
Just lost a lot of my day to Microsoft and the wonders of OfficeXP

Ended up installing it/uninstalling it off of three computers as various problems came to light. Went back to Office97, but XP left a little present: Ctfmon.exe

The removal exe I downloaded from the net failed to work as advertised, so I had to remove it manually. I kind of got rid of it (i.e. deleted it out of my system folder and deleted the registry keys), but since it kept reinstalling itself in the registry every time I opened an explorer window prior to deleting the exe, I think some parts of it are still lurking out there tying up my resources... especially during the startup of applications that it was interfering with.

 just needed a place to vent.

If anyone knows anymore about this and how to make sure all traces of it are gone, please feel free to help me :)

Hhmm....

My computer started doing nasty stuff on Friday. I couldn't even connect to the internet as it decided to drop all of my drivers etc. (win98).

On Saturday, sick of dealing with the computer prollems I constantly get, I went and bought a clean HD and Windows XP Pro.

Was a cinch to install, and it's been working great. I think the only way to go back to your Office97 safely though is to format the drive. I can't see just sticking another OS over top of this.

Office 97 is not compatible with winXP.

Anything made after 1998 (or made FOR windows 98) will allegedly work fine.

And, hey. What do you expect? Its microsoft!

Yeah I love those new Mac Commercials.

"Hi! I'm a complete moron with no skills what so ever so I bought a Mac!"

"HI! I come from a family of complete idiots who cannot even install drivers from the CD that came with my Dad's digital camera so I bought a Mac."

"Hi! I'm a lawyer..." OK this guy needs a Mac!
I have been reborn a new man!

Notice I never said a better man.

Those Mac ads are nearly as good as the old OutPost.Com ads...back when they'd shoot gerbils thru a cannon, etc

Just got invited into the .NET Server 2003 beta stuff a week or so ago.  I figured the software would be fun to test, but the Beta Newsgroups are where the REAL gems.  Its nice to get straight answers and not be asked for a credit card for an incident report!  :D

CTFMon comes with Microsoft Office XP.  As long as the Text Services & Speech are enabled in the Control Panel, this program will force itself back into your list of background programs.

Recommendation :
Disable "Text Services & Speech" in the Control Panel if you are not using them.  Then, disable CTFMon using Startup Manager.

I am using speech. So I disabled Ctfmon.exe permanently the only way I knew how-- deleted it.

I just don't know what triggered it to be reinstalled in the startup registry keys everytime I opened an explorer window... whatever was turning it on needs to be removed too.

As for converting to WinXP... no way. My brother is using it and I gave him identical hardware to mine (P3 1.2GHz/TUV4X/Radeon 8500). Clearly by using Win98SE I have ended up with the better gaming machine... all my games and hardware work 100% right (within the limits of ATI drivers :)) and run faster than with his XP. The only advantage he seems to have over me is being able to support 1.5Gb of RAM. I can only tweak Win98SE to work with 1Gb.

Never could stand Win2000... and XP is even worse :p I will only convert when newer games/hardware force me to.
