3d glasses with AH?
« on: October 22, 2002, 11:15:22 AM »
Just checked a web-site today that lists AH as a game that is compatible with their 3d glasses.  These particular one's sell for under 100$-not bad.  I know the folks at IL2 make use of them but I have never heard anyone talk about them over here.  Is it because the eye-candy doesn't warrant them here-particularly the cockpit graphics.

Maximum PC did a review of some glasses a while ago - they found for many people they cause heachaches (from the eye strain I guess).

One of the AKs brought a pair to the last con and let me try 'em out. Didn't cause me any discomfort during the short time I used 'em. However, they didn't provide that great of a 3D effect with Aces High.

HiTech took a look at them and seemed interested. It seems I heard that he is not currently using the DirectX Z-buffer which would provide a greater 3D effect. Maybe one of these days.

3D glasses? for "glasses"?  (a pun,, chuckle, laugh, etc)

You're talking about the eDimensional 3D system.  Bought it about a month ago.

Long story short..

Requires specific video cards,, really likes Nvidia types.

Will work with many flight sims (including AH) but as someone stated above,, the quality of 3 dimensionality ranges from Great to MEGA-CRAPPY depending on which sim.

AH is about a 6 or 7? (scale of 1 to 10, in my humble opinion)

I didn't try it on all the sims listed (that I have) because it ate into my valuable AH online time..  But found that "Janes" WWII (Battle of the Ardennes?) was simply breath-taking!  It looks and feels like you're really skimming over the forest of the Ardennes!  A deep, 3-Dimensional feel in and out of cockpit.

Another issue I had (but didn't screw with it too much) is the "memory" constraints.. lotsa' tweaking needed or the graphics get flugjee.

Bottom line.. In AH the 3D display is not "deep" and often confusing during engagements,, (your brain will sometimes "un-meld" the 3d enemy plane and suddenly your shooting at 2 planes in differant places!  (you always pick the shadow-plane of course, and get killed because of it! HA!)

I use e-Dimensional for visual delights in MSFS or Janes..  Turn it OFF in AH when it really counts.

My 2 cents..

I think the 3d glasses add a ton to the experience of flying in AH... I can fly near the ground and judge distances so much better... it just looks and feels neat.

BUT... it did have penalties on frame rate, image quality (has a tendency to rasterize the image, kind of looks like 640x480), and as mentioned above with the gunsight. The only issue that would keep me from using it to dogfight is the gunsight. If the reflector was focused at infinity (as the real sights are), it would always appear as one image. But it is coded as appearing 2 or 3 feet in front of your face, so it turns into a double image when you are looking at targets, especially distant ones.

If you haven't tried them before, find somebody that has them and borrow them. It really does look cool. But I am willing to bet that after trying them that you play most if not all of your games without them.

look in the Hardware forum

I have them and use them on occasion in AH

3d setting low, the gunsight problem is minimal and the immersion is higher

I die more with them on but right situation they are worth the money in fun factor.

I got used to them, they never gave me a headache but 45 minutes to an hour is as long as I've worn them before tabbing out of the 3D enviroment

I have them and have used them for long periods of time without headaches.  I tested them in Everquest for several hours just to see if they would cause a headache.  They did not.  I don't wear glasses though, and the earpieces started to bug me.

I've messed with them in AH.  It is possible to fix the sight problem by messing with the settings.  Essentially, you make the cockpit  part of the gui and thus 2d.  It's funky though.  I've yet to get it set up well enough to make me happy with the results.  The best I've gotten gives very good 3d effects, but distant objects (planes and buildings) are shadowed.  If I get rid if the shadowing, I lose the 3d effect.

They work great in some games, and just okay in others.  If you consider buying them, make sure your monitor will handle a reasonable resolution at a good refresh rate.  Most sites recommend 140MHz.  That requires a mighty expensive monitor.  I've found that 100MHz at 1024x768 works fine for me.  The problem is that the vid card is displaying two separate images.  If the refresh rate of your monitor is too slow, you get flashing (like an old, silent movie).  That will definately give you a headache.  Also, keep in mind that they are designed for CRTs.  I don't know how well they work on LCDs.  They may not work at all.
