If this is a flame, its the most civil and reasonable one I've ever seen on this board.  Nice job, Skorpyon.

I'm truly amazed that he can actually play at all with PIII450, 56k AND use vox too! You should count your blessings and try dialing up to another free dialup ISP.

I answer every email I get, unless there is a virus attached to it.  If you are being switched to TCP, it is usually associated with your connection or some problem between you and the servers.

On a 56K connection, your uplink speed from your computer (which you cannot see without talking directly to the modem and asking it what speed it is running at FROM your computer) can be so low as to cause a switch to TCP, and can cause voice to stop.

Generallly speaking, if you set your connection to a maximum of 33.6K, it will assure your uplink speed to be close to 28.8K, which is ample for AH.

Also, using DXDIAG, make sure your sound cards hardware acceleration is set to 3/4, not full.

Just because you make no changes in your local system does not mean changes have not taken place.  If you are running XP or W2K and have not disabled the automatic updater, your computer can change without your knowledge.
That same utility will cause problems with your connection.  For XP/W2K, you have to go into the Services control panel to disable it and the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service".

Other emails I toss into the trash are ones with no subject line (spam), or those with irrelevant subject lines (i.e. See your Momma on the Internet!....).

The Internet has had some serious problems with DOS attacks over the last couple of weeks.  We cannot control those problems and they can and will effect the quality of the connection to the servers.
Thankfully, these usually do not last too long, but they have been happening with greater regularity.

Also note, I usually will not respond to flames directed at us on the bulletin board.  The only reason I am responding here is as I remember the email I did get from you and wanted you to know I have not received another one.

I had the same problem. It's related to Sound Blaster cards. There are new drivers that eliminate the problem. Secondly, until you download the new drivers, run your audio control panel in the background, when you lose vox, hit the windows key, recheck "mic boost" and return. That will fix it. Oddly, this is a usage/time issue. The more you talk, the sooner you lose vox.

Anyway, the new driver cures the problem. Find your driver here:

Well, I've had a night to sleep this one over and feel I owe an apology to Skuzzy.  This post is a good example of what not to do when one is ticked off about several issues.  It was over the top and inappropriate.  Again Skuzzy, SORRY!

I do want to thank everybody who has responded with useful suggestions (there were 2 notable exceptions, one quoted the other:D ).

I'd think you wouldn't lose UDP to a HtH game you host because it's local to your machine.  In other words, there is no UDP for you to lose in the first place.  What they meant was do you lose UDP when you connect to other HtH rooms.  That might help in seeing if it's just with HTC's servers, or if it happens when the games are hosted on other's computers (not including your own.)

One minor point, Skuzzy has been insanely busy moving AH over to new servers at new location.
From what I've seen he has been working 14 to 18 hour days.

Give the man a break.

If all the above advice did NOT work, call HTC and ask for skuzzy. I'm willing to be you'll get instant help.

Skuzzy,

I've been playing AH nearly two years with a 56K dial-up and never knew any of those things. Since connection issues are so rampant these days, perhaps you could post a PRIMER on maximising connections...like you have nothing else on yer plate these days...LOL

It WOULD help a lotta folks tho'

Gloves,

Have you tried deleting AH and downloading a FRESH install? I often get problems with the auto updater and have to do it manually to get a clean install.

Maverick - Good idea, but it was one of the first things I tried.

Wlfgng - I'm at work.  Haven't been able to try all the suggestions.

Ghosth - That's why I apologized about 3-4 posts before yours.
