F4U-1C use in Korea...
« on: October 25, 2002, 09:02:11 AM »
Korea will be running in the CT this week.

I know the Chog was used in Korea, but was it used by the Navy and Marines?
Did the Marines use it as a land based fighter?

Neg Eskimo,

There was a squadron or two of F4U-1D but no F4U-1C.

Although for historic accuracy the -1C can take the place of the F4U-4B, -5 and AU-1.

Hmm...
I thought I've seen several pics of hogs with 20mms from Korea...
I can't recall the source however...
Maybe I'm thinkin I saw or read something about the planes they used in the TV show "Baa Baa Black Sheep".  Didn't some of those have 20mms?

Do you have any references F4UDOA?  It would be good to confirm this.

Thanks,

eskimo

OK, I did some research.

The F4U-5 was used in Korea.  It had 20mms and 2800 HP.

Heya Eskimo,

Sorry for not expanding.

These F4U's were all used in Korea and had 20Mil.

F4U-4B/C
F4U-5/5N
AU-1(F4U-6)

In fact they all had the M3 20mill. Quite the cannon.

eskimo2,

Just to clarify a little on F4UDOA's list.

F4U-4B  Cannon armed
F4U-4   6x.50 cal
F4U-5 and 5N  Cannon armed
AU-1 (F4U-6)  Cannon armed

The C designation was not used on the -4.

if you look at the korean war pix of cannon armed corsairs you can tell they are F4U-4b or F4U-4c (AFAIK the b model was intended for the brits, but they cannceled the order as WWII was winding down & they didn't want to pay for them, so the USMC got the -4b. the -4c model was ordered by USN &/or the USMC, but i dont think there is any actual difference between the two types) rather than F4U-1c by the different type of blast tube. the -1c has a long and narower blast tube than -4b or -4c.  also the -4 carried M3 20mm cannon, which is a bit more powerful than the M2 cannon on the -1c
