Happens all the time... No crazier today than it was decades ago.

Only difference is the near constant media assault.

think you are wrong on this one .... too :)

could list at dozen nutbag events that have happened in the last 5 years that either never have happened before or not to the new/improved level it has happened now.

I'm sure you can too, once you stop making excuses for the crap in this world by calling it normal

De-sensitivity takes place over numerous decades via various sources of media.

Reap what you sow.

Too bad another student wasn't armed, like the one in VA about 6 months ago that shot the intruder before he could kill any more...

University of Texas, sniper in the tower.  At first it was thought he couldn't handle the stress of school, work, and raising a family.  After he was killed, the surgeon doing the autopsy found a tumor pressing against the lobe of the brain that controls aggression.

Wanton violence has always been a part of the human condition.  But it does seem like it is worse than it used to be.  A common thread in these events seems to be that the perpetrators are  blaming others for their own failures.  A weakening sense of personal responsibility appears to be a contributing factor in these tragedies.  What solutions, if any, are there?

...but experts concur that it was not the cause of the rampage...

I'm betting that if we compare violent acts per capita year to year, you won't see a noticeable spike in the recent past.

It's not about excuses. We are indeed the human animal.

Maybe I'm just more cynical than you, Mr. Eagler.

Some interesting background on Charlie, wonder if this nut at U of A will have a similiar upbringing?

Quote
..."But when the investigative committee met to review its findings and conclusions, they were unanimous.

There Was a Consensus.
What began as a murder mystery unfolded into a tragic life story with a clear and sobering lesson. Whitman had been raised in a tyrannical, abusive household. For some time before his murderous rampage, he had been under extreme stress from which he felt there was no relief or escape. Since his attempts to resolve the stress were unsuccessful, he chose to commit homicide and then suicide.

A Life Without Play
Looking further into his early life, the committee also discovered that Whitman had not played as a child or young adult. This lifelong lack of play deprived him of opportunities to learn the critical social skills inherent in spontaneous play which allow individuals to cope successfully with life pressures. The committee concluded that this lack of play was a key factor in Whitman's homicidal actions. The serious tyranny and abuse by Whitman's father, combined with other life experiences, had laid a bleak foundation for Whitman's life. But the committee felt strongly that if he had experienced regular moments of spontaneous play during the course of his life, he would have gained the skill, flexibility, and strength to cope with difficult situations and make non-violent choices. Dr. Brown and his fellow researchers concluded that play acts as an antidote to violent tendencies and is a powerful catalyst for positive socialization. Those who avoid or have never learned to play may become lost in the shadow world of fear, rage, and obsessive worry.

Yeah some people go as far as to blame the perpetrators religions!

For the majority of people it's the safest time in the history of humanity, guys.  How many people died because of terrorists this year?  How many died in a given year of WW2?

Without comparing the numbers with the total population, they don't mean much.

A city with 100,000 people has more murders than a town with 1,000. That doesn't necessarily mean that the smaller town is safer.
