Well, here it is...this has to be the record for highest troops drop...108K !!!  (yes, 108,000 feet)...obviously some sort of "anomaly").

Seano was flying, I was riding and taking pics.  Troops were kicked out the door at 108K over A5....dunno if they ever made it down.

I think Warp said their climb rate was 5k/min. Seano said he had left the plane in auto climb for about 30 mins. When he got back it was high and climbing rapidly.

Something very funky happens to the air at about 50000feet...

And something very funky happens to the goon between 20 and 30k...

a 30k airstart in the goon gives you that sameinsane climb rate.

According to HiTech, there IS no air after 50,000 feet.  He was of the impression you can't fly any higher than that when I asked at the con.

Apparently Pyro's models are open-ended and don't have a cut-off when the atmosphere ends.  What you have are space shuttles after that point.

Have to wonder what some noob strato-fortress would think, though, up at 30,000 feet, looking out his gun ports, and watching a very bored paratrooper float by sucking on his oxygen bottle...

Out of curiousity I took just a 152 over the 50,000 foot barrier during lunch.  I don't think there is no air.    The plane flew as though it were at sealevel atmosphere regardless of alt from 50,000 on up, but there was still resistance as my speed was not infinite.  True and airspeed needels slide together and match at that point.

I don't know what tactical use something like this would be- but it is true.

The helicopter c47 I think is more usefull.

Above 30000feet, the c47 can maintain a 60 degree climb, at just over 100mph...

I did this several months ago. For some insane reason, I decided to drop some troops from very high over a bish base - just to see what would happen. Dropped from  about 25k, compensating for wind. An F4U had come up looking for me, thinking I was a bomber.  As he was gaining on me, I figured my only option was to climb, if possible. He kept climbing after me, and as I passed 30k all of a sudden my climb rate skyrocketed. He fell further and further back , and we had a good laugh on graytext. Then I leveled out, and my airspeed went up so high it tore the goon to pieces.

I never did hear anything about the troops.
