Hello there,
Been playing AH since late august, learned a lot in the meantime. There is one thing that still surprises me though, the diving ability of the Hellcat.
Some time ago I was B&Z-ing a few planes in a Bf109G10 when I had to rtb ammo. Did a fairly steep dive (not TOO steep) to the deck, hit WEP and figured I would get away easily. Not so, I saw a F6F give chase and the guy actually came within firing range and shot me down! I was at 60feet running into compression in level flight at that time. He probably shot at long range because I saw quite al lot of tracers go by before he hit but what can you do in a Bf109 at that speed?
Yesterday (bad day, 0 kills, 6 deaths) I chased a P51 down to the deck in a LA5, had some altitude on him. When he pulled G to get just above the water I got into firing range and pinged him a few times but right after that I was shot down by a Hellcat which was at 2.0 range the last time I checked 6. Again I was going so fast that the LA5 became difficult to control and the P51 was only gainig slightly when we were at near 0 altitude.
Does the Hellcat accelerate so well in the dive and can it get to such high speeds so easily? I do not often misjudge the ability of enemies to get within firing range....
