modem question
« on: October 31, 2002, 07:27:12 AM »
Ok, some computer hardware questions...

I've got a 56K connection.  I have been experiencing times when I am logged into my ISP, but my computer is not communicating with the server.  The little "computer network" symbol is in the tray (so I know I'm connected) but when I try to surf, or connect to ah, nothing happens.  I do ping plot and basically get no response.  Redialing doesn't fix this.  The only thing that does is rebooting.  Unfortuately, the problem also happens when I've successfully connected to AH or have read email or surfed etc.  Its like the modem just quits working or my ISP is dropping me, but I'm still "connected".

Is this a modem going bad or do I have a problem with my ISP?

Thanks!!

What brand/type of modem?

If it is a software based modem, I can see what you are describing happening pretty easily.  If it is software based, you need to disable any compression in the modem properties as it will chew up a bunch of CPU time.
Also, check to see if the modem is sharing interrupts.

I used to see this quite often when running my old ISP business.  Typically, the modem would attempt to connect at the fastest possible rate, even with errors, so it could report the blazing speed to the user, then immediately try to retrain its speed downward.  During the retrain, the modem would lose sync/communication with the remote terminal server.
If the modem loses connection during the retrain period, it will show it is connected as a retrain is quite legal and sometimes can take quite a bit of time.

Hi Skuzzy -

Thanks for the response.  I'm runnnig a Diamond Multimedia SupraMax 56i Voice PCI modem.  I'm not sure if its software based or not.  Not sure what you mean there.

However, these are the settings of the modem.

Advanced Port Settings:
Use FIFO buffers (required 16550 compatible UART) - this is checked
Recieve Buffer: set at 3/4 maximum setting
Transmit buffer: set at max

Under Advanced Connection settings:
Use error control - checked
Required to connect - unchecked
Compress Data - checked
Use flow control - checked
Harware (RTS/CTS) - checked
Software (XON/XOFF) - unchecked
Modulation type - standard

Resource information for the modem"
IRQ 11   SupraMAX 56i Voice PCI
IRQ 11   Supra 2260 PCI Modem Enumerator
IRQ 11   IRQ Holder for PCI Steering

What do you think?  Anything out of the ordinary here?  thanks for the assistance. :)
