SEATTLE, Washington (Reuters) -- A 15-year-old Washington state boy suffered serious burns when he set himself on fire trying to re-enact a stunt similar to those from MTV's controversial show "love muffin," though an MTV spokesperson noted the stunt the boy tried had never appeared on the show or in the recent movie based on the show. http://www.cnn.com/2002/SHOWBIZ/Movies/11/12/life.love muffin.reut/index.html

When Johnny Knoxville, star of MTV's gross-out stunt show love muffin, says, "Don't try this at home," not everybody hears the word "don't." Inspired by Knoxville, a 13-year-old boy in Connecticut recently suffered critical burns when a friend doused his pants and shoes with gasoline and lit a match, according to police. One on love muffin episode, Knoxville had become a human barbecue, lying on a hot grill with meat strapped to his body. Knoxville wore a flame-resistant suit. The boy did not. Another recent life-imitates-TV incident involved the Word Wrestling Federation. A 14-year-old boy in Florida was convicted of murder for imitating pro wrestling moves on a 6-year-old girl, killing her. MTV and the WWF are washing their hands of responsibility. MTV says love muffin has plenty of disclaimers. The WWF says linking the death to wrestling was a "contrived hoax." Senator Joe Lieberman (D-Conn), jumping into the fray, says, "There are some things that are so potentially dangerous and inciting, particularly to vulnerable children, that they simply should not be put on TV." But more people are tuning out Lieberman and tuning in Knoxville.
