I am barely intelligent and I got the views worked out on my CH gear. Granted, I might not be demanding, but I don't find it any worse than the views in AH (six-view aside, and I don't care about it).

As for sims, Il-2 is a must-have. I have seen few games hit their target so thoroughly.

Here are a few sight lines that we can discuss.

There is no “if” about it, and now that I know you were a beta tester, that answers a lot of the questions regarding your post.

The three yellow lines are possible 6 views that I think could be realistic. That is how much I think the pilot should be able to see if he turned his head over his right shoulder and looked back as best he could.  The three different lines are just a matter of discussion as to what should be allowed.

The front part of the lines just gives you an idea of what I mean by peripheral vision, you can ignore them is you want.

I agree with those line but only if they are with relaxed shoulder straps. It is humanly impossible to move my head that far with both shoulder planted on seat.

Where did you hear about ww2 pilots relaxing their belt?  Any link would be great

In most WWII fighters, they couldn't see toejam. Real WWII pilots talk about weaving and having the wingmen that keep you alive because they couldnt see toejam,  all the time.

The later varient bubble canopy models sure, but HT ,making reference to flying real planes is limited to a P51 and not relevant. He made the views as such because most gamers like them. More gamers, more revenue.

Deal with it.

Go to Zeno's Warbirds, select

How to Fly the P-47 (1943)

Part 1: Ground Handling, Takeoff, Normal Flight and Landing

Advance the video to 9:10 and watch the pilot visually clear the area as he prepares to take off. Pay particular attention to the shoulder harness moving in and out on its inertial reel.

Hope that helps, Russian.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

This is from an interview with Saburo Sakai, it's called "an afternoon with saburo sakai" if you want to look it up .

Great vision is absolutely essential for a fighter pilot. Finding your enemy even a half-second sooner than he finds you gives you a great advantage. I'd teach my pilots not to tighten their lap belts too tight, because it prevents you from swiveling your hips so that you can quickly look directly behind yourself. The field of view in the Zero was great.

Because you can't see toejam, and any little thing helps.

In AH, you'd need a 50' harness. Just saying.

Russian:

Another example comes to mind from Erich Hartmann where he stated that in order to do his violent negative G combat escape manuver that he would tighten his straps before the move as to not get thrown around the small cockpit of a Bf109G. He also said that any guy trying to follow him would get pasted up against his canopy glass, this suggests it was common practice for both LW and VVS to fly most of the time and even in actual dogfights with loose straps - certainly not full tight no motion straps.

I made my stick setup about 4 days After IL2 was released. The panning was too slow at first, and at the same time not "what flexible enough to allow for a rapid, yet COMPLETE visual scan across the entire 2 axis of view.

There was NO such thing as a cougar, nor hazard script, or the like then.

:)

The most realistic view system will be one that places you in the center of your seat(IL2) that moves with a mouse function (IL2) at a rate that is just a bit slower then (Aces High), but as you start your Turn to LOOK behind, above, etc... the relative position in the X and Y axis will SHIFT to their respective sides of which the intended viewing angle was sought.

For point of reference for those that may not follow: The Z axis would be in this case the plane that runs from the Nose to tail, essentially the Straight ahead/straight Back view.
