I recently made a tour of all three countries, and ended up deciding to fly Bishop. I like the sense of humor and the players.
Flying as a rook I had to deal with two obnoxious boneheads (one on vox). This one guy kept berating me to take my PT away from the carrier as it was blocking his shots (subsequently he managed to get the carrier sunk).
Rooks never ran a mission in the 2 1/2 days I flew there. As a Bishop I can count on 2 - 3 per hour at peak times (many thanks to Fester, Rocstar and others).
Perhaps these issues have driven away other Rook players as well.
Well Smash, I was that “bonehead”. I recall asking the PT drivers to kindly not position themselves between incoming torpedo bombers and the defensive guns of the fleet. PT’s cannot defend a TG. What they can and often do manage to do is detonate proximity fuzes of the primary defensive guns, which are the 5” batteries. Time and time again, Ju 88s where able to drop torpedos unmolested because our shells detonated over the PTs. After repeatedly asking the PT drivers to move further out or to the rear, without any indication that they would do so, I became a bit short tempered. I’m sorry if I offended you. I was just trying to protect the ship. After all, in that instance we needed the CV platform operational. There were about a dozen other players depending on the CV to rearm and refuel. Getting it sunk because some people won’t move their PTs will not endear you to them one bit. Sure, you pay your money so you figure you can do whatever you want. However, when your fun infringes on the enjoyment of others, the line is crossed and squawking will be heard.
Personally, I have no use for PTs. I can see no purpose to them beyond being a great source of entertainment for those who kill them. Last week, I killed 49 PTs in the span of 5 minutes. That’s right, 49. Another gunner got twenty some-odd more. And what did those PTs accomplish? Nothing, zero, zip. You like PTs? Great, have a ball. But I would rather have my country-mates in aircraft or gun batteries, where they can actually make a difference. I‘ve got several squadies who love to take out PTs. The fact that they have yet to land a single sortie does not seem to dissuade them one bit. Hey, it’s their nickel… But should they inhibit the defense of the TG, I’ll be asking them to move clear as well.
What’s more, I can always count on one or two PTs spawning at a CV that is under attack. They motor right alongside. Why? To collect proximity kills on everything the AI ack kills. As often as not, they never even fire their guns.
As to losing CVs: The current modeling makes it very difficult to keep them afloat when suicide dorks are willing to fly straight into them. Check the scores of these guys and you’ll find most of them can’t kill anything by any other method. As it stands, I lose very few CVs because I won’t take them into situations where they cannot be properly defended. Yet, I often end up trying to salvage a CV placed in danger by someone else. Results depend more on the enemy than anything the commander might do. It is especially difficult when you can’t even get your own country-mates to cooperate. Sometimes we save them, most times it’s too late.
As to missions, how can you organize missions when everyone is actively defending against 4:1 odds? Who will fly them if every man is needed to hold what you have?
Now, tell us the real reason you moved to the Bish. It wouldn’t be related to getting ganged all the time, would it?
My experience is that the guys who pooh-pooh the Rook’s claim that the numbers imbalance is central to being reset often, they are the most likely to be found lined up to vulch.
My regards,
Widewing
