Hey Whats with this Muting for typing fuk?
« Reply #30 on: November 05, 2002, 12:46:25 PM »
Almost totally offtopic question:

One day Channel 1 (before I managed to get it squelched) had all kinds of languange I only used on the other side of the brow, but the person in question wasn't muted.  These were not misspellings or typos.

Is the mute thing in the MA a function of someone muting them or is it a filter in the chat?

Used to have screenshots, but I didn't think they were worth keeping.  Mathman's response was best, though ("nice mouth, you kiss your mother with it?").

Both puck.  The filter is not always on.  The moderators are not always present.

good question - you'd think the filter would catch that (not all "naughty" words are filtered it seems?), but this perhaps implies that there is also an unseen hand at work, which reinforces at times the perception it's not so much what one says, but rather who one knows.

this is part of the cons to having "secret" cops, it can lead to the impression that enforcement is not applied in a fair and/or consistent manner.

it's not my call, so YMMV.

why would this be? i'd think it'd be a primary concern to ensure it *is* on at all times.  why woul dit ever be turned off? or to make it part of the "reset" programming.

Interesting that the attention seeking, rude, crude and commonly discourteous seem to be the only ones who have a problem w/filter and moderators.

Well, speaking only for myself, I keep channel 1 squelched and if I have anything unpleasant to say when I get shot down/miss, etc it's to myself so text buffers are not required.

The language in question is in the dictionary, but there was great debate about adding "diddly" to the lexigraphic standards.  Personally I was always taught if you have nothing pleasant to say, say nothing.

I've never had many problems with the language on-line.  This may be due to having room/country/and squad as the only channels I see.  Everything I've heard about channel 1 doesn't make me think I should consider unquelching it.

Unfortunately, squelching channel 1 or individuals doesn't prevent the garbage from appearing in films.  It's up to the player to try to surgically remove said garbage from an otherwise good film using the Film Editor.

I don't really know shane... but if I had to venture a guess it would be this:

It is a filter.  That means it filters out text and issues a warning.  How it goes about that could mean that it actually filters text out of non-cursing situations and still issues a warning.  Basically... it is impacting to generic chat.  Its also incapable of picking up every new creative spelling of the same old curse words.

So, you turn it on for a while so that people who actually curse alot get to experience the filter and all of its fury.  After a while, you don't need it because they believe they will be muted.  So, you can turn it off.  It stays off until enough people realize its off and start to flood the airways again.

Dunno... that's just a guess.

In other words people get warned/muted for typos, which is stupid.

maybe if you don't intend to cuss in the first place....

I mean, if you're not trying to type, or mis-type, something vulgar in the first place...

I dunno' .. that seems to make sense and rarely does that mean someone will follow it.

Not just typos... regular text.  "I'll fly the F4u-1C until Friday" would definately trigger the filter.

There's not a non-impacting way to impliment a decent cursing filter.  So it get's used when things start getting bad again, but not all the time.

I as a non native speaker need advice.

What's so bad about "bite me"? Isn't it just cute for "shoot me"?

How do I make sure I don't type something that someone might consider to be insulting?

If you type something innocuous and they go ballistic it was probably a misunderstanding.

"bite me" is more like "piss off" in Americanese.

No easy answer ccvi.  In this particular instance, it was the context of the usage, not so much the actual verbage.

Basically, it boils down to common sense, courtesy, and a modicum of respect.  All these taken into account should answer any questions about this topic.

brendo, just because you did not get an email back does not mean we didn't do anything.
