SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - A Florida stunt pilot
crashed his fighter jet and died Monday while returning home
following an air show in the Dominican Republic, an event
spokeswoman said.
The F-86E jet crashed a day after the air show as pilot Jimmy
Rossi was starting his trip back to the United States, said
Milca Morales, spokeswoman for the Caribbean Air Show.
It was immediately unclear where in the United States Rossi
was flying. The pilot lived in Ocala, Florida.
``He died what he loved doing best,'' his wife, Barbara
Rossi, told The Associated Press in a call to the Rossi home.
She deferred other comment, saying, ``I'm sorry; I can't
think right now.''
The cause of the crash near San Luis, just east of Santo
Domingo, remained unclear, Morales said.
Rossi used the fighter jet to simulate combat as part of the
show on Sunday with another pilot, Tobe Gooden, who used a
MiG-17 fighter jet, according to the event program.
The two left together from the San Isidro air base at 8:40
a.m. (1240 GMT) Monday and, five minutes later, Rossi radioed
to the other pilot saying he was losing power, Morales said.
The plane crashed nearby, she said.
As part of the investigation, authorities were to conduct an
autopsy, she said. It was immediately unclear how old Rossi
was.
Dominican police and civil air officials did not immediately
answer calls seeking comment.
