system component advice requested

Hello All , I've got framerate envy.  Over the ocean, I'm in the 60's.  Over land &/or fighting an enemy, I run in the 40's.  In a busy field, lots of cons, smoke, fire, bleeding crying & dying, I fall into the low 20's.

I've downloaded lots-o-vid card drivers, never sound card drivers because all of them 86 sound from the puter, gameplaying or not; have also removed anti-aliasing, fog table emulation, v-sync in both 3d & open GL.  Still the results don't improve.  Also have msconfig'ed & defraged too.

Here's what I'm running, advise away at where to start; & THANK-YOU for your time too :)

Gateway Performance 1300-P4 using XP Home Service Packs & updates are current
Intel (Monterrey) motherboard bios is up to date
1300 MHZ PIV processor
256 mb RD ram, PC 800 memory (c-rimm)
GeForce3 ti 200 built by PNY
SB Live! series (wdm)<<<----so sez "device manager"
Gateway sez SB Live! PCI Sound Card (Value Card)

I'd be guessing ENTIRELY on where to start.  So, I'd be appreciative if some of you would bring your experience to bear & GUESS ENTIRELY lol for me.

Thanks again, Hap

The weak link in that system is definately the CPU.  Your board may be able to take a faster socket 423 Willamette P4 (they made them up to 2 GHz), but the Gateway bios may prevent that.

You don't say at which video resolution you're running. But I'm getting rates similar to you with my dual P3-1G / Gf4-4200 with Quincunx FSAA enabled at 1600x1200x32 and no overclocking. So look to your graphics card.

I'm seeing better framerates with my GF2 at 1280x1024 on an Athlon 1.4ghz, so I wouldn't immediately toss out the vid card.  The cpu is probably one area that is holding you back though.  You might try tossing out the motherboard and cpu and going for some more muscle.  An intel 845 mobo with a new P4 and some DDR SDRAM might be a good thing.

Or you could drop some coin on an athlon mobo ($80-$150) and an athlon XP 2000+ ($93) and 256 meg DDR ($70-$90).  If you do this though, you may want to ditch the Soundblaster Live since there used to be issues over PCI bus utilization with soundblaster and VIA chipset motherboards, and even though they're "fixed" my understanding is that the fix slows the system down somewhat.  I could be wrong about that, but you could even get a new mobo with 5.1 surround sound onboard and get better sound without even needing a sound card.  Soon-to-be-released NForce2 motherboards ought to be great in this capacity as they have very nice onboard sound and ethernet.

I hate to say it, but RDRAM was a gamble to begin with and it doesn't seem to have paid off very well for Intel.  Low latency helps games more than maximum memory throughput, and even generic SDRAM has better latency than RDRAM.  Whatever you do, don't buy more of the PC 800 RDRAM.

Also, make darn sure that you aren't running any background diagnostic software.  That stuff is only needed if you're 90 years old and don't have a great-grandchild to keep your computer healthy.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

bloo25, qts, & eagl, thanks for your replies & advice!

Have seen advertisements online for intel cpu's & amd's as well.  I also sent an e-mail to hitech & the anonymous replier agreed with you.  The cpu is the weakest link.  They suggested I stay with intel, yet I know many players use athalon.

An Intel's cpu Pent 4 1.7GHz PGA 478 256k Cache 400 MHz costs about $150 it seems.

At BCD2000.com  there's a advetisement for a 1.6GHz S478 w/ 512K but they don't post the price.

Does Aces High make 512k of cache in a cpu desireable?

Saw an athalon xp2100+ 384k cache socka 266MHz for $150 as well.

Might you weigh in again on the choices I outlined?

Thanks, Hap

I wouldn't buy any cpu that doesn't start with a "2".  2.x Ghz intel, or athlon XP 2000+.
