I really want to move away from this monstrosity called the AS400 but..
I need to replace it and it's apps..
(finance, public works, business license, etc)

Apache, I know you mentioned something about a different solution for your firm.
I'm looking for something enterprise-wide.

any leads?
anyone?

Sorry, just now saw this.

Unfortunately, the powers that be have decided to not only stay with the AS400, but purchase a new one to boot.

When we were looking into an alternative, every vendor we spoke with stated there wasn't any problem converting the databases over to a SQL or Oracle database. We were looking at canned computer aided dispatch, records keeping, intelligence and the like databases, so it wasn't really anything too difficult to begin with.

40-50 users, financial-public safety-public works-tax-businesses, etc.

no ad=hoc queries... we have trouble just getting them to do the basic pre-written stuff (stock queries and forms)

database is pretty large .. 10= years of financials for the Town.

we just added a planning database (land file) that has all the data from the assessors office about plat's etc
so it'll grow pretty damned large.
We also would like the ability to link all the data to our to-be-developed GIS database of the Town, ski-hill and surrounding areas.

Similar to Apache, the powers that be want to go buy a new As400 with updated everything (their words) but the council asked me to look into alternatives (including pricing for conversion, roll-out, training, hardware and support contracts)

no worries.. it's still a project that's in progress.

thanks for the link, I'll add this to the possible alternatives.
