P-38 film
« on: November 08, 2002, 05:09:39 AM »
Here's a film I took earlier tonight of a 3v1 between myself and 3 Bishop P-38s.

Despite being out numbered, I did have the advantage in altitude and the three Bishops were flying a loose formation that didn't allow them to come to the assistance of each other.  This let me single them out without having to worry about getting jumped by the other two while taking care of the single one.

My first pass, you'll notice I did a feint on the middle P-38, forcing him to to break hard which then let me continue and shoot down the lead P-38.  Then I double back, taking care of the middle guy and then finally roping the third one.

It's a decent film that shows using SA and altitude advantage to gain the upper hand while being numerically outnumbered.

3 P-38 vs. 1 P-38

I'll post some more P-38 films from a duel I had tonight showing a rolling scissors against a Yak and another one showing a Double Immelman against the same Yak in a later fight.

Dweeb Questions
« Reply #1 on: November 08, 2002, 06:00:30 PM »
Ackack.  I've studied your footage. Tick vg.  A few dweeb questions if you would'nt mind...

I've been playing h2h for a while now and have problems stabilising the bandit in my gunsight reticule, and end up using loads of ammo around a unstable target.  Pros appear to able to fire a burst and hit staight away.  Is this due to practice, or using a good joystick, or what?  This problem always confounds me when I appear have an excellent firing solution, but cannot keep the bead on the bandit.

Your rate of scan around the cockpit seems to be a real fast pan.  Do you use snap views or do you pan your head around?

After a kill you appear to use the vertical straight away.  Without wishing to ask the obvious, is this to gain height advantage for  tactical advantage?

Thanks

PS: Do you have a good steer so I can watch demos of immelmans, scissors etc?

The stick scale I use helps cut down on the nose bounce in AH, which makes it easier to keep your nose on target while you fire.  I've attached my stick scale to this post and if you want to use it, just put the file into your AH/settings folder.  Make sure to rename your original stick.cfg file to stick.bak in case you want to go back to it.

I use the F9, instant view.

It really depend on the situation, but yes, the vertical climbs were to gain a tactical advantage in case the other bogies were trying to climb up to me and I try for the Rope-A-Dope.  You'll find that sometimes going vertical like I did after the kill isn't a good idea, like when you've got a higher bogie above you.

Thanks

The other thread I posted, More P-38 films has three films I've made that shows a double Immelman and rolling scissors fight against a Yak.  You can check out this site,  Vulture's ACM tips and check out his excellent write up that goes into great detail on how to do various manuevers like the rolling scissors, yo-yo's, etc.  Another good site with a wealth of information is NetAces.org which features various write-ups from different sources.

Hope this helps you some and if you have anymore questions, just holler :)

Those numbers are generated by AH when you move the sliders in the joystick setup.

Ack, I viewed your films and I just have one question.  Why is it that when I try those flips, loops, and spirals like that in a P-38 I end up at ~110 TAS and doing nothing but dodging bullets and trying to accelerate for the next 20 mins?  ;)

Some good moves in there to be sure.

I'm far from being an expert 38 pilot but I got a film that might help show other newbies like myself a way to fly it and what it's capable of with only flying it a few times. I really didn't go in with much of a gameplan (as usual) and I still have no idea where some of those planes on me went. It was fun though, and a big to the guys who I fought against in it. It was a LOT harder than the film shows.

Remember, be gentle...this film is more for the benefit of newer players. It should never be compared with the ones the experts can make.

Nice film, Manx.  I'm a pretty big P-38 fan myself.  At lower speed with flaps deployed, the P-38 can turn circles around Ponies, and performs incredibly in the vertical, as you excellently demonstrated.

save that file.  save it in the aceshigh/settings folder.

but... first... copy or move the orginal stick.cfg file to some other place, or simply rename it to say... origstick.cfg

that way if you're not happy with the settings provided by ack-ack's file, you can simply switch them back via renaming.

after you put ack-ack's "stick.cfg" file in the settings directory, when you load up AH and go into setup/joystick, you'll see the sliders for scaling have been changed to reflect the values in his file.
