Anybody ever been through a Hurricane?
« on: November 12, 2002, 05:57:26 PM »
I've seen a few of them in my time, but only one big one.  I missed Cameal by like a week or 2, was born just after she blew through.  Or maybe I was an infant, I can't remember :D    We have home movies from a week or 2 later when we drove to Atlanta. There was a barge 1 mile INSHOAR

The big one I went through was Alicia back in '83, I had just turned 14 and it was the weekend before I started high school.  If I remember correctly  she had 140mph sustained winds in Houston.  I spent the first half of the storm with my face about 2 inches in front of the bay window in our living room,  a nice 4'X6' piece of glass bouncing back and forth slapping my nose.

Durring the eye I called my buddy william and we met at the park, it was directly in the middle between our houses which were about 10 blocks apart or so.  Well we're out goofin off looking at all the trash and trees every where and tripping out on the sea gulls.  Then he's like "oh my god!"  I look down the street and all we see is a wall of wind and water that goes to the skie.  It was one of the most sureal moments of my life and I'll never forget it.  We started running to his house because we were on "his side" of the park.  We made it to his house about 3 min after the back side of the eye.  MAAAAAN that HURT!!!!  ever had a maple leaf hit you in the face at 140 mph?  It left a leaf shaped welp on my cheek  stem and all.  Well about 10 minutes later his electricity goes out and his parents won't let me go home, thank God. So there I sat in the dark, now scared for the next 4 hours.

I went back home and my parents were still sleeping  So Williams electricity was off for 2 weeks.  We lost ours for about 15 seconds during the first 1/2 of the storm.  We had that huge bay window in the living room and (8) 3'x'6  windows up front and a 40' palm tree in the front yard.  We lost nothing :)  Our next door neighbor's tree went through his daughter's room. Across the street from us was out of electricity for about a week.  Houston looked like a nuke had gone off.  A waste land.

Was a blast, but I never want to go through one again...

I've been through a few...but missed the last really big one that hit here...Emily in 1988.

I was in one in around 1984 when living in a Condo right above a beach.  The waves hitting the reefs literally rattled the whole place.  We were having a hurricane party.

It was only like a category 1 or maybe 2...nothing to be concerned about, although a few water-spouts (small tornados) touched down and caused a fair bit of damage.  No loss of life though, thank goodness.

We are lucky here, in a way, because of a really bad hurricane that hit the island about a hundred and fifty to two hundred years ago.  That storm virtually wiped out the island and as a result the governor "decreed" that every dwelling must be made of stone.  Concrete block is now the preferred building material.  Only a really, really big storm could do damage to most houses here...and to be honest, if it is that big...you can pretty much scratch us off the map.

When I live in VA beach I went through a few, nothing to write home about though.

The only name I remember was Gloria. 87 88?
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

I remember Gloria from when I was a kid, tree came within about 3 feet of coming right through my bedroom window.  Only other one that comes to mind was Bob in the early 90s.  Not too many make it all the way up through New England.

Lots - although they're called typhoons here. Nothing too spectacular though - the day off work gives 'em a holiday feel with the bars packed, loads of wind, trees down all over & some really mad rain. As animal says - you get used to it. Fixed a TV aerial in Typhoon signal 3 once - that was a bit hairy ;). The last Typhoon 10 (direct hit) was a bit of a disappointment though. Seems like there's always some idiot Westerner who goes surfing/swimming during a typhoon and (surprise, surprise) gets swept out and drowned - which is always amusing.

an afternoon summer thunderstorm can cause more fear and damage than many "dangerous" hurricanes that have passed by

a front like the one just about across the US is far more deadly than most hurricanes to a country like the US

Ive been through a few. Andrew was the worst. I was 14 when it hit back in 92. My entire neighborhood was destroyed. We had no power for over a month. Damn it gets hot in Miami in august with no A/C. We've got a photo album of our destroyed house, boat and cars.

I just very glad our house was made of concrete, not wood frame.
It reminds me of the three little pigs when I see those wood houses all collapsed. While the hurricane was kinda scary, its was the months of cleanup and getting our house rebuild afterward that was most painful.

I've been through 2-3 since then but they were nothing.

This is mostly true, but the big hurr's can spawn many many tornados.  and 140 mph sustained winds for 6 hours will do A LOT of damage.
