Early 80's... call it '82 or '83 in the north Atlantic while aboard CV 66 USS America.
We intentional ducked into the storm to hide from Soviet spysats on our way north to the Norwedian Fjords.
That hurricane tossed our carrier around like a rat terrier with a new toy (which is saying alot as most times our CV was rock solid while our escorts bobbed like corks in foul weather) tore off a couple antennas, ripped off a sponson, mostly surface damage. Didn't do the jets tied to the deck alot good either, but we didn't lose any.
Anyhow to finish the tale, we successfully entered the fjords undetected, launched our planes, and watched all hell break loose as the Soviets scrambled a large force to overfly us.
Seems it was the first time a super carrier had gotten that close to the Motherland unescorted/undetected. Bet some heads rolled on that one.
