I was raised on classics like ludwig ( Mr. B.) chopan ( Uncle cracker Sr.) and Herb hancock (rocky). I was VERY excited the first time I heard "Gangsta Rap" as it's referred to by young republicans.
Why?
Rap (As it's called by those of us that take the time to listen to it as a means of telling a story) expresses the situations frustrations and Ideals of the urban musician. I remember hearing mozart in my youth and thinking " good grief, this guy just takes what he's already heard, adds some primative sound effects and tempo changes... It's too bad I dont know what he's trying to say".. Then, much later I saw the movie which inlightened me to a lot of the situations of the time.. THEN the music made since. Its victorian jazz!!
RAp is effectively the same thing, with no rules to dictate what you do, you do what you feel! THAT! is music.
another example might be "Fan halen", steal Rips from Asia, add a couple semi-talented pretty boys, and some big chested girls.. Then all you really need is a video to show the tits. It's no wonder they are so popular with teen agers, THats really all teen aged life is all about, get laid, look good, and hope others notice.
But take some old school david bowie, or the Doors, the music has a message, what made it so popular is its easy to understand was its typically slow tempo and clear kings english , (If you speak the language). Rap masters have the same quality, (If you speak the language)
The rip in my vid is a Mystical tune, Most of his hits are about good times, gettin laid, and smoking weed. (20'- something situations) But, if you have to translate it, its just F this, kill that, nigga the other...
Expand your mind and learn the plight of the modern nubian. Rock music doesnt express their reality any more than classical expresses yours, but that doesnt mean you cant relate. You just have to know what it means!
