Been thru my share in New England, and the un-named storms after Oct. (offical hurrican season ends storms are not named) The "Perfect Stormed" kid our A-- along with a few others. You get used to them. Tie up the boat, bring the cat indoors and close the windows. About all you can do.

Been through every one to get to Martha's Vineyard since 1945. Remember Carol in 54 particularly, four feet of water and lotsa boats in the parking lot downtown. My mom and I went out driving around in her 36 Ford roadster. She liked getting out during nasty weather - died in July 02, at the ripe old age of 94. God rest her soul.....

Hurricane Frederick in Mobile 1979.  Compact storm and perfectly symetrical...dry with no rain.  Sustained 140 mph winds and loaded with hundreds of mini-twisters.  Could hear pine trees snapping off all around like toothpicks...three landed on the roof and one hit a 1962 pickup truck parked in the driveway (actually glanced off the truck, but did put a dent in the side.)    :-(    The pine trees were whipping around like crazy.

Udie, I went outside when the eye passed directly over the house to survey the damage.  We lost 17 pine trees, most of them at least 16" in diameter on a half acre lot.  There was no rain in this hurricane, only wind.  We were out of power three weeks.  The National Guard was deployed and we were under martial law, so to speak.  It was an adventure for me, since I was 23 years old.  I grabbed a chainsaw and began clearing the streets and neighbors' driveways, not for money mind you, everyone helped out any way they could...I thought it was fun.  Musta sawed up 20 pine trees lying across driveways and the street out front.

One good thing about it was, beer never tasted so good as then.:D

Early 80's... call it '82 or '83 in the north Atlantic while aboard CV 66 USS America.

We intentional ducked into the storm to hide from Soviet spysats on our way north to the Norwedian Fjords.

That hurricane tossed our carrier around like a rat terrier with a new toy (which is saying alot as most times our CV was rock solid while our escorts bobbed like corks in foul weather) tore off a couple antennas, ripped off a sponson, mostly surface damage. Didn't do the jets tied to the deck alot good either, but we didn't lose any.

Anyhow to finish the tale, we successfully entered the fjords undetected, launched our planes, and watched all hell break loose as the Soviets scrambled a large force to overfly us.

Seems it was the first time a super carrier had gotten that close to the Motherland unescorted/undetected. Bet some heads rolled on that one.

Hurricanes are overmodeled.
