any other modellers here?
« Reply #15 on: November 14, 2002, 12:15:52 PM »
Timely thread for me.  I hadn't built a model in many, many years and about just a few months ago started getting the urge to take it up and so started researching the web about various things on the topic.  Finally felt I got enough tips and tricks to attempt a good one and so went out and bought a Hasegawa F6F-3, Tamiya F4U-1A, P-51B and P-51D all in 1/48 and a host of cockpit sets, flaps and all the goodies.  Just recently started my F6F-3 which has a Jaguar cockpit set and an after-market cowl (I have to open the lower cooling flaps 'cause the cowling is for a dash-5.)  I just glued the fuselage halves and wings together last night, though the cowling is just free fit for now.  Puttied the seams to be safe, wiped with some rubbing alcohol, and will re-scribe where needed after sanding.  What have I gotten myself into!

I haven't even built one single model yet and I already have others waiting to be bought and plan to do the soon-to-be released Hasegawa F-8 Crusader 1/48, then an F-4J, F-15C, F-14D, F-18D, F-16 either USAF or USN aggressor then...  lol

I just finished my first model, a 1/32 scale A6M5 made by Tamiya. A wonderful high quality model,

Zero by Tamiya

I enjoyed building it a lot, so I'll definitely build more.

I just started a Hase F-4J.  Haven't decided what markings I want to put it in, though I am leaning towards Cunningham and Driscoll's triple kill plane "Showtime 100" that made them the only Navy aces of Vietnam.  The other that I was thinking is a plane from VF-84, but I think I will save that one for later.  What I really want is a 1/48th F-4B.  I have some decals for a VF-51 MiG killer, but the Hase F-4B is OOP and tough to find.

I just recently finished a Tamiya F4U-1D and an AM SBD-3.  Sort of started on an AM B-25B, but put it back in the box.  I needed a break from radial engines.

I think after the F-4J, I may build an F6F-5 in McCampbell's markings of October 24, 1944 (the day he got 9).  I think I am going to use the Jaguar cockpit set, Cutting Edge cowl and some of the Eduard PE stuff to make it look good.

You should put up some pics on a websight mathman.  I wouldn't mind seeing them and I'm sure alot of others wouldn't mind too much either.

Mathman, how badly do you want that F-4B/N?  I'm pretty sure the hobby shop here has the Hase 1/48 with the Bi-Centinnial VF-151 markings on the box.  If you want it, I can pick it up for you or give you the ph# of the place and you can call them and have them ship it.  It's here in San Diego so not too far from you, Nordahl Rd in San Marcos.  Also, the Jaguar F6F cockpit set is nice but the seat bugs me because the seatbelts do not hook up to the bar behind the seat.  So after market seats such as:  http://www.greatmodels.com/cgi/display.cgi?item_num=uc48030
 are the way to go.

Landing is a piece of cake, especially with some flaps and has no tendancy to ground-loop.However..Takeoffs are serious stuff with this bird.I have totaled 2 of these F4U's and badly damaged the one in the picture. You really have to get lots of ground-speed on rollout or it will tip-stall if you horse it off the ground.A good breeze really helps it on liftoff but if you didn't notice the wind drop between flights...Arrg!!!

The one I'm building now is my fourth Top Flight F4U and when it's covered,DsrtRat is going to airbrush it with RAF markings...:)

This is a scratch built display only model of my father in laws RP-63 (that's him in the back ground).

My father-in-law flew stateside in WWII. He trained gunners for the Army Air Corps. He has time in the; AT-6, P-39, P-63, RP-63, AT-11, B-25, and B-17. The RP-63 was a stripped, armor plated P-63 that was used as a manned flying target. His job was to mock attack B-17's and receive friendly-fire! The bullets were 30 cal. powdered lead/bakelite plastic, and would disintegrate on contact with the hardened aluminum armor plating on the RP-63.
Yes, they were bright orange.
