Mosquito FM question

I have noticed that the Mossie seems to have some very nice high speed handling characteristics.

In more than one fight It has been able to roll and turn with a mustang in a dive. It was gaining ground or holding up well with the P51 also.

Was it a fluke or poor piloting by the mustang drivers? Was the Mos known for its high speed handling? I cant seem to find any information on this trait.

Heck one night a week or so ago I came up against a Mossie in my Gus-6 at about 10K co-alt. Merged and went verticle--so did he. OK--that's my game (I'm thinking). Looped 3 times and he's hangin with me! So I start a spiral climb left thinkin--he'll never catch me in that one--right? NOT! After about 4 spirals he not only catches me but blows me into the next county. I don't recall who it was. That one had me scratchin my head! I'd thought after all those verticle moves I'd have at least equalized any E advantage he might have had prior to the merge. <shrug> Maybe he was almost outta gas--real light. Only explanation I could come up with.

That Mossie must be a mohnsta!

The other night krusher comes chasin me pony from maybe 2-3k back and slightly higher. I saw him and thought no problem...was headed back to hot turn and thought to myself, let him come.

I let him in close with the intention of executing some cool pilot stuff...displacement roll is my favorite...here he comes...I do my thing flying from the 6 view...he's still there, turning with me.

We are perhaps 500 feet off the deck when me thinks to myself...I'll just scissor in flat turns...no way he can stay with me...again, out of the 6 view, he stays with me.

I then thought crap...whats up with this??? So, I pull harder in the flat scissors and black out completely, eventually skipping across the water like a stone on a pond. :)

Never took a hit, but the whole experience was so unsettling, I died and he got the kill.

Moral of the story....I will never ever again fly against a mossie thinking they are no threat. This whole little episode took place at 400ias....the Mossie is a beast.

<S> Krusher :)

Think of a mossie as an La-7 that cant go on the vertical.

In the case above, where the mossie stayed in vertical fight with a fighter, the mossie CAN do that but only if it has a tremendous amount of speed built up prior to entering the vertical fight.

It IS a monstah! R00l joo!

The Mossie is fast and can turn well for a fighter/bomber it's size.  Yes it does have good high speed handling.  However it's vertical performance is poor and so is it's turn rate.

The Mossie is my favourite food when I'm in  a pony (or any other fighter plane for that matter).  The only times I have been killed by one are when I have been engaged low and slow with other cons.

Tour 21 (P51B & D):
bluemako has 7 kills and has been killed 2 times in the P-51D and P51B against the Mosquito Mk VI.

However when flying one I have killed 6 fighters with it (P51D, Bf109G10, N1k2, Yak9u, P38L and Mossie).  I know for sure that the G10 was killed in a turn fight that started co-e so I guess the Mossie can hold it's own...

Mossie needs to be light & down to 25% fuel before trying to play in the verticle from what I've seen.

Even then it needs a LOT of speed.

Get it turning & slow & THEN go vertical, kills em every time.   :)

Fun bird to fly, and even more fun to watch spiraling down on fire.
