Best Icon Idea EVER!!

Since all the other Icon ideas suck, I thought I'd add my crappy one too.

Move the Icon to the underside of the contact.

Simple.

This would force you to look at the target and not the icon during firing, without denying one of any of the currently available information provided by the icon.

That's a thought, but what about aircraft/vehicles on the ground?

Gvs dont need range icons. When you see their icon, you inside gun range (theirs usually). hehe

An alternative RANGEFINDER icon would be to have a "progress" bar.

P-38
=---

Would be inside 1k range

P-38
==--

would have the P-38 be at 2k range

P-38
===-

Would be 3k away

P-38
====

Would be 4k away

As you close in distance the bars tick left or right. Icon range is 6, so you can have up to 6 bars.

This way you can have the pilot have a DECENT (not EXACT) idea of how far away a target is, he will KNOW when a target will be inside the game's max range guns (.50's), but wont have the exact rangefinding.

I believe this icon will result in people really FLYING to get a gun solution rather than "cool,  hes at d900, I know that if I spray a few hundred rounds of .50 half an inch in front of him ill ping him some" or "cool, hes at d400 , I know if I lead by 1/4th an inch ill ping him some" situation and instead go "ok im in gun range, i can spray a bit and i dont know if i'll hit..and this guy hasnt seen me yet, so if i shoot now he'll see mee.. but if i get closer ill nail him good..." kind of mentality (which IMO is closer to "reality").

And gawd knows I abuse the rangefinder myself. Ask urchin, I think he still remembers when I blasted his Ta152 from d950 just by spraying half my ammo on him. And then again, theres no sweeter kills than really saddling up on a con and ripping his arse to piecees at d200.

A couple of years ago, there was a big icon discussion based in part on how someone sneaking up on you from behind would be betrayed by his huge icon being visible even if his plane was hidden.

HTC tried moving icons below the vehicles but there was a graphics glitch that was causing the icons to sort UNDER the terrain polygons causing them to randomly disappear.  With icons above the planes, the icons were above the horizon more often and the bug wasn't as obvious.

I don't know if the bug was ever fixed.

In any case, when they started turning off icons when the enemy was shielded behind a canopy frame or part of your own vehicle, or behind a mountain, it wasn't a big deal anymore.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.
