A Lanc that's still flying.
« on: July 21, 2000, 03:30:00 AM »
I know many of y'all might know this, but in England there is still one flying Lancaster. I kinda thought that this might be a good place to get some custom sounds if anyone's over there. If that's not an option, just take AKWabbit's Spitfire sounds and put those there, since it had 4 Merlin engines. There's also one undergoing restoration and one being rebuilt. I've got a pic of it if ya wanna see it.

The Lancaster you mention is part of the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight which is based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.  This year it is in the colours of 61 Squadron 'Mickey The Moocher'.

Please see this link -
 http://www.raf.mod.uk/bbmf/bomber.html

61 Sqn had been at many bases throughout middle England.  They were at RAF North Luffenham (Rutland) with Manchesters before moving just up the road to RAF Woolfox Lodge where they first received the Lancaster.  From there they moved to RAF Syerston near Nottingham which also meant having some planes at St Eval.  They then moved briefly to RAF Skellingthorpe (Lincs?) before moving to RAF Coningsby. Back to Skellingthorpe they went.  They also were are Sturgate and RAF Waddington.

As mentioned in the BBMF write up, Mickey The Moocher went onward to 1653 Heavy Conversion Flight which was actually based at RAF North Luffenham (very fond of that place as I used to work there!).

Anyway, I was at Coningsby not so long ago and the Lancaster started her engines and took off whilst I was there.  If I can I will try and get in touch with someone from the flight and get some sound recordings, though it maybe some time.

There is also a Lancaster flying in Canada, out of Hamilton, Ontario. The Canadian Warplanes Heritage Museum.

just got back from a very wet & cold RIAT at Cottesmore. Saw the Battle of Britain Memorial flight Lancaster Twice (Sat & Sun), it looked and sounded fantastic.

BTW, Nice to meet Nexx there, Shame no one else made it. Perhaps next year.... I walked back to the show on Sunday and walked in for free (Makes me wonder why I bothered paying £21.95 for a ticket on Saturday). There were some good bargains to be had at the end, I came away with a fantastic black & white photo of 2 Spit's in close formation in an "Angry sky entitled "Charlie2 To Red Leader" by Herbie Knott complete with frame for £5 after a lot of "haggling"(Was £29.95 on Saturday).

I remember hearing that HTC may model a nice big bomb for the Lanc as well.  What was the biggest bomb made for her? 20,000 Lber?

Hi

I remember HT saying that the largest bomb (cookie) available was going to be the 4000lb.  The 22,000 would mean a specially adapted Lanc.

Here is the Loadout for the Lancaster-

Loadout 1:-

14 bombs of either:–

500lb GP; 250lb SAP; 250lb B Mk III; 1000lb USA Type; 500lb SAP; 250lb AS; 600lb AS; 1000lb MC; 250lb GP; 250lb LC; 250lb Small-Bomb containers; 1000lb GP Short Tail type.

Loadout 2:-

8 x 500lb & 6 x 250lb AS (Mk IV only)

Loadout 3:-

6 x 500lb & 3 x 250lb AS and 5 x 250lb SAP

Loadout 4:-

6 x 1000lb & 3 x 250lb GP

Loadout 5:-

1 x 4000lb HC & 6 x 1000lb GP (Short tail type or USA type 1000lb) & 2 x 250lb GP

Loadout 6:-

6 x 1500lb A Mines or 6 x 2000lb HC Bombs

Loadout 7:-

6 x 1900lb & 3 x 250lb GP

Loadout 8:-

6 x 2000lb AP & 3 x 250lb SAP

So, yep, it could carry 14 of the US 1000lb bomb type! Whoa!
