Reggiane 2005: La-7 killer
« on: November 21, 2002, 06:14:54 PM »
I did a little research into the Reggiane Re.2005 and was somewhat surprised at this fighter's low level speed. See the chart below for a comparison to the La-7. I only had 8 data points for MIL power and Emergency power, so I simply connected the lines in between data points. Probably not too far off though.

Aside from being considerably faster than the La-7 at low altitudes, the Re.2005 is better armed with three MG-151, 20 mm cannon and a pair of 12.7 mm machineguns. In terms of maneuverability, it will easily dominate the Lavochkin. Indeed, the only areas where the La-7 has an edge is in climb rate and speed at middle altitudes.

This thing would be a stellar addition to the plane set. Too bad only about 32 were built, although most of those saw extensive use for several months prior to Italy's surrender.

My regards,

Widewing

< scratches head >

Lemme see if I'm getting this right.

Ya WANT a plane that flys faster than the La7, has more firepower AND is more maneuverable?

Plus there were ONLY 32 built?

< looks around >

Yeah, ok....only if it's unperked ;)

WW is merely stating facts ;)

If it is ever introduced in AH.. wow, the specs suggest it'd have to be perked. The La-7 is itself in a dangerous boundary of perked and non-perked.

But then we'd need an La-9 as a Re2005 killer.

P-80!  There were at least two in Italy flying combat patrols in 1945.

There is no way those speed numbers can be correct, it just doesnt make sense for a 1475hp plane...

3.14 lbs/HP  la7

3.88 lbs/HP re2005

La7 will eat its lunch.

I must be misreading the chart or something ... it seems from the blue and green lines that from 13,000 feet altitute to 20,000 feet altitude, this thing is actually slower with emergency power than with military power ... widewing?

Re2005 numbers are simply wrong. The Reggiane was and is a good 1943 fighter, nothing more. They run their 1,475hp DB605A engine at no more than 1.3ATA, go figure.
"And one of the finest aircraft I ever flew was the Macchi C.205. Oh, beautiful. And here you had the perfect combination of italian styling and german engineering .... it really was a delight to fly ... and we did tests on it and were most impressed." - Captain Eric Brown
